Position Description:

Sets up and operates Computer Numerical Control machines to perform various functions such as cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, and broaching of metallic and nonmetallic workpieces utilizing knowledge of machine tool capabilities, machinability of materials, and shop math.

Key Responsibilities:

• Reads and interprets blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences. • Mounts, aligns, and secures tooling attachments and workpieces on the machine. • Assembles cutting tools in tool holders and positions tool holders in machine spindles as specified using hand tools or insert cutting tools in specified machine magazines. • Loads control media such as tape, card, or disk in the machine controller or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions from the data base. • Calculates and sets machine controls to position the spindle in relationship to the workpiece and to regulate factors such as cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow. • Starts the machine and monitors displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions. • Stops the machine to change cutting tools and setup according to the required machining sequence or to measure parts for conformance to blueprint specifications using precision measuring instruments. • Enters commands or manually adjusts machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining. • Discusses control media errors with supervisor or programming personnel to resolve problems. • Inspects and measures parts for conformance to blueprint specifications.

Required Education & Qualifications:

Must have excellent attendance and ability to work with multiple and changing requirements. A minimum of a high school education or equivalent. 2 - 4 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship preferred.
