Office Assistant / Sales Associate (Lumber & Building Materials)

Pana, IL | On-site | Full-time | $15.00-$20.00 per hour

R.P. Lumber is hiring a full-time Office Assistant / Sales Associate for our Pana, IL location. This role combines office and sales-counter work: cash handling, basic bookkeeping, accurate data entry, and helping contractors and homeowners with lumber and building-material orders.

You will report to the General Manager. On a typical shift you may balance a register, enter tickets in the point-of-sale system, answer phones, and help customers at the counter.

What you will do

Office, cash, and records

• Verify, reconcile, and post payments received by cash, check, and credit card
• Enter information into company forms, spreadsheets, point-of-sale, and accounting systems using prescribed procedures
• Balance the cash register according to company policy
• Handle data entry, phones, reports, and recordkeeping
• Research credits, returns, and late payments as assigned
• Help the credit department with customer credit information and past-due accounts when asked

Sales counter and customer service

• Help customers and contractors in person, by phone, and by email
• Answer questions about product selection, pricing, quotes, orders, deliveries, and installations
• Follow up on customer requests as needed
• Enter orders, pricing, and related data in the point-of-sale system so invoices, work orders, and tickets are accurate
• Help with special-order products using supplier catalogs (pricing, colors, sizes, availability)

Showroom support

• Stock, face, straighten, price, and clean assigned merchandising areas
• Complete other store and showroom duties assigned by the General Manager

What you need to have

• High school diploma or GED
• Solid basic math and an understanding of bookkeeping fundamentals such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
• Ability to provide professional customer service and work as part of a team
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle more than one task at a time
• Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as business needs require

Nice to have

• About one year of office, retail, or sales experience
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
• Ability to learn point-of-sale and other business software quickly

Pay and benefits

Pay range: $15.00-$20.00 per hour

Starting pay is based on job-related factors permitted by law, including relevant experience, education, skills, market conditions, and work location.

Schedule and work location

This is an on-site, full-time position at R.P. Lumber, 500 W. Chrysler Dr., Belvidere, IL 61008. Work is split between the office and the sales counter. Weekend and holiday shifts may be required.
