The Prince George's County Department of Social Services is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a temporary Office Service Clerk (General Clerk 1G), grade G06 position, in the Family Investment Division.

About the Position

This is an entry level contractual position, and s/he will be responsible for clerical tasks and services to support the effective and efficient operations of the organizations Family Investment Division. The Office Clerk position serves as a member of the Departments Family Investment team and is supervised/evaluated by the Office Supervisor and the Program Manager to ensure adherence with all protocols and best practices. The primary goal of the Office Clerk is performing diverse clerical operations and require the review, verification and interpretation of information in order to make determinations and resolve problems in accordance with policies, regulations and laws applicable to agency programs.

About the Agency

The Prince George's County Department of Social Services (PGCDSS) is the primary human services provider in the county, operating as a local agency of the Maryland Department of Human Services. The Department provides opportunities for eligible residents to become independent, responsible, and stable members of the community through public benefit assistance programs. The Department also provides direct support for the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults living in the county, investigating and addressing instances of suspected abuse or neglect. The work of PGCDSS is done in an effort to build stronger communities, one family at a time.

Examples of Work

  • Reviews, verifies and interprets information in records, applications and other documents by using knowledge of agency policies and procedures to determine if appropriate procedures have been followed and to resolve problems.
  • Processes and issues permits, licenses, vouchers, exemptions, invoices or other documents pertinent to agency programs and based on application of regulations and procedures to factual information.
  • Responds to inquiries, makes determinations and resolves problems relative to inaccurate or incomplete information and discrepancies in various records and documents being processed.
  • Explains basis of determinations to workers in other offices and agencies, clients or their representatives and the general public.
  • Collects fees, makes corrections to payments owed or due, posts fees and payments to accounts and keeps financial records not requiring knowledge of bookkeeping or accounting.
  • Assembles and verifies data and compiles information in order to prepare routine statistical and status reports.
  • Updates and maintains files, logs, schedules, rosters and records.
  • Composes routine correspondence to provide or request essential information, explain the status of requests and the procedures to be followed.
  • Performs other related duties.

General Plan Information:

The Prince George's County benefits plan year is from January 1 to December 31.

A spouse (to include a same sex spouse) can be added to the health benefit plans. A marriage certificate and social security number is required to add a spouse.

Children under the age of 26 are eligible for coverage under the health benefit plans. This includes stepchildren and children of the same-sex spouse. A birth certificate(s) and social security number(s) is required to add a child(ren). If you are only adding the stepchildren or child(ren) of a same-sex spouse, you will need to submit a marriage certificate. You will also need to submit the birth certificate of the child(ren) and your spouse must be listed as a parent.

The premiums for health benefits are deducted on a pre-tax basis with the exception of Long-Term Disability, Extra Life Insurance and Voluntary Benefits (Short-Term Disability, Whole Life Insurance, Critical Illness, Accident Insurance, Cancer Indemnity, Hospital Indemnity Protection, Accident Indemnity Plan, Supplemental Dental and Group Legal Services).

New employees must enroll in the County's health benefit plans within thirty (30) days of the hire date.

The effective date of the health benefits coverage is the beginning of the month following a waiting period of forty-five (45) days from the date of hire.

After enrolling in the County's benefit plans, employees may only make changes to the plans either during the open enrollment period, which occurs annually (usually each October), and/or during the year, due to a family status change (i.e., marriage, births, divorce and adoption).
