On-Call Clinical Skills Educator

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking Board Certified/Board Eligible physicians to serve in a unique role in medical education. Serving as one of a group of several physicians, Clinical Skills Educators (CSEs) spend one or more half days a week each with first year and second year medical students teaching clinical skills including communication skills, history taking, physical examination, and simple procedures in a small-group format. The role of a CSE can range from 10% time (.1 FTE; 1 half day) to 40% time (.4 FTE; 4 half days). Additionally, there may be opportunities available for CSEs to serve as the leader of a clinical skills course (i.e. the communications course or pulmonary course) for additional contracted FTE compensation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Longitudinal delivery by CSEs of curriculum content.
• Develop and sustain activities that help students achieve the competency for Active Citizenship in Community Health.
• Facilitate student wellness that helps students achieve the competencies in the domain of Personal and Professional Development.
• Socialization and a sense of belonging to the medical community.
• Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
• Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
• All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

• Eligible for a license in the state of Michigan.
• MD or equivalent required

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, CERTIFICATIONS:

• Board certified or board eligible and achieving board certification within 5 years of hire.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• The successful CSE candidate will have a substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine and education.
• Have passion about participating in the education of medical students and residents.
• Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
• Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
