Job Description

The Facilities department has an outstanding opportunity for an intermittent, on-call Custodian to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Custodian Supervisor, the Intermittent Custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the buildings of the UW Tacoma Campus, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, safety, and integrity. This position provides regular building maintenance function by performing custodial tasks to maintain cleanliness and care of facilities for the entire campus. The custodian position also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.

This hourly, intermittent position will perform essential services and may be required to work during any period of declared suspended operation. This position will have varied hours between 1st shift (3:30 am to 12:00 pm), Day shift (7:30 am to 4:00 pm) and 2nd shift (12:00 pm to 8:30 pm) and may include after-hours event cleaning.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily duties (95%):

  • Clean whiteboards and chalkboards, replacing classroom supplies as needed; dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop or vacuum floors, reset space furnishings; empty receptacles for trash, recycle, and compostable materials, pick up litter within the campus and on campus grounds. Make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or University standards.
  • Remove trash, clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures in accordance with UWT procedures and standards; and refill dispensers. Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures; adheres to safety measures for cleaning.
  • Strip, clean, buff and apply finish to floors; use floor buffers/polishers; vacuum and deep clean carpets with extraction equipment.
  • Use and maintain assigned equipment and hand tools such as vacuum, broom, mop, squeegee, ladder for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture. Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
  • Lock and unlock interior spaces; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows and reporting any issues to lead/supervisor as well as Campus Safety and Security; report unauthorized occupants.
  • Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures.

Irregular duties (5%):

  • Report needs for repair and/or maintenance.
  • May wash interior or reasonably accessible exterior windows.
  • May perform cleaning and related activities in areas within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment to remove snow or debris or sweeping sidewalks or stairs.
  • May move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis. May operate high-pressure washer.
  • Communicate in person, via email, by phone and over a radio. Use computer equipment to complete reports and timesheets, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc.
  • Perform related duties as required.

  • Physical ability to do required work.

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to be physically active for the entire shift while completing cleaning tasks, including regularly lifting up to 25 lbs. and sometimes up to 35 lbs.
  • Employee is required to properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of custodial, janitorial or housekeeping experience in schools and/or commercial buildings.
  • 1-3 years floor machine experience; such as, buffers, scrubbers etc.

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$21.70 hourly

Pay Range Maximum:

$24.39 hourly
