The Oncology CMA is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the MD to patients who present to the Oncology/Hematology clinic. The Oncology CMA will provide care utilizing established patient care principles and ethical standards as well as policies and procedures established by WGH and the Oncology/Hematology practice. The Oncology CMA will manage and prioritize throughput efficiency of office visits. They will room patients on the office side as well as coordinate bringing patients from infusion who are scheduled for follow ups with the oncology providers. Services provided by the CMA will include, but are not limited to, rooming patients to see a provider, communicating with the infusion nurses in regard to when infusion patients will be seen on the office side, general patient care, assistance with procedures, documentation of activities and patient/family education, obtaining vital signs, and collecting labs through peripheral venipuncture. Administration of nonchemotherapy PO, subcutaneous, and IM medications may also be delegated tasks. The CMA will have knowledge of registering patients in EPIC. The CMA will also be expected to update patient records, use communication skills to discuss medical related issues and questions with patients and families, place referrals in EPIC to other health care providers, schedule procedures and treatments, participate in infection control and quality improvement, prepare exam rooms with necessary supplies, screen telephone calls for referral to MD, take phone messages as related to medical questions, relay messages concerning accurate records of testing performed and/or sent to laboratories, maintain information on patient’s EHR, and is responsible for helping in insurance precertification and preauthorization process. The Oncology CMA may also be requested to assist the oncology infusion nurses with various tasks within the CMA scope of care.
