    Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

    Job Role Summary

    The Licensed Practical Nurse, in collaboration with an RN, performs the functions of a Licensed Practical Nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating assigned patient care.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities

    • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health values
    • In collaboration with an RN, performs the functions of a Licensed Practical Nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating assigned patient care
    • Responsible for all patient care assigned, and standards of practice with the support of the RN
    • Participates with assistance in health care team approach for clients; assists in performing client examinations, treatments and specialized procedures as defined by area specific guidelines
    • Administers prescribed treatments and/or medications after demonstration of clinical competency and in accordance with hospital/center/nursing policy and procedure
    • Performs independently advanced skills within area guidelines and after education and demonstration of clinical competency
    • Maintains medication accountability records, stock records and client-physician schedule
    • Performs intake process of medical history gathering, lab work scheduling, withdrawal symptoms documentation and client orientation to clinical procedures
    • Participates in team meetings including input of information that can be helpful to the counselors in client-care and clinical management
    • Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to age of patient served as identified in area-specific procedures or job specific competencies
    • Evaluates clients to determine whether a different level of medical care is needed

    Job Requirements

    Graduation from an accredited training program for Licensed Practical Nurses, or the equivalent, incorporating pharmacology, or proof of completion of pharmacology course

    Six months of clinical nursing experience with patients of all age groups

    Current Indiana license as Licensed Practical Nurse or eligibility for license

    Experience working in a physician's office, immediate care or emergency room preferred.

    Knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses if working in mental health (for Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center only)

    Experience with the Following Needed

    • Telephone triage and recognizing symptoms that require urgent escalation
    • Central line and implanted port access, blood draws, and specimen handling
    • Medication administration, injections, and infusion-related support within the LPN scope
    • Patient education and reinforcement of treatment instructions
    • Care coordination, referrals, prior authorizations, and appointment scheduling
    • Electronic medical records, preferably Epic
    • Infection prevention and care of immunocompromised patients
    • Working with medically complex patients and multidisciplinary clinical teams
    • Strong candidates should also demonstrate compassion, attention to detail, excellent communication, sound clinical judgment, and an understanding of LPN scope-of-practice limitations.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    Knowledge acquired in an accredited LPN training program; skills in delivery of patient care, and use of equipment and instruments appropriate to assigned unit

    Good interpersonal communication skills with ability to accurately read and record information

    Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and to communicate and work effectively with a wide variety of people/patients

    Ability to function in stressful or crisis situations

    Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served

    Ability to use age appropriate communications skills

    Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs

    All individuals working for the Opioid Treatment Program must have experience and training to safely manage therapeutic services to patients and to provide therapeutic services to patients receiving Opioid treatment medication
