Job Summary and Qualifications
The Oncology Pharmacy Manager provides managerial support to the Director of Pharmacy and other Pharmacy Department Leadership through day-to-day departmental leadership and coordination of oncology pharmacy workflow. The Oncology Manager will coordinate and supervise the daily activities of Oncology Pharmacy staff delegating assignments as necessary in accordance with established policies and procedures and to maintain department productivity. This position is responsible for helping to create a patient and customer focused department in support of the delivery of exceptional patient care. This position collaborates with others to develop policies and procedures, maintain formulary compliance, and implement operational and informatics-related procedures to ensure optimal and safe patient care for the oncology population. The Oncology Manager will also be responsible for attracting and developing a team of highly capable, committed supervisors and staff through recruiting and interviewing candidates that have a passion for patient and customer centered care.
What you will do in this role:
- Manage and supervise Oncology Pharmacy Operations including responsibility for formulating and implementing institutional policy and practice at the department level, and overseeing day to day pediatric operations and workflow.
- Assist in the planning, development, organization, operation, and evaluation of oncology pharmacy services. Assess and change pharmacy operations in coordination with the pharmacy management team.
- Assure pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, and ongoing training in the pharmacy in coordination with other pharmacy managers.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate information systems to optimize pharmacy workflow.
- Coordinate with the Information Systems Pharmacist on operational activities related to informatics, order entry systems and automated dispensing cabinets.
- Assure compliance with pharmacy laws and provide staff guidance when appropriate in regards to regulatory agencies including The Joint Commission standards, National Patient Safety Goals, and USP 797/800, and participate in quality assurance activities to evaluate and maintain safe medication practices.
- Assist with budget preparation and ongoing cost containment initiatives for medication use and operations. Provide other management reports as required
- Help assure that policies and procedures are updated and followed in coordination with the pharmacy management team.
- Coordinate with the Pharmacy Buyer on operational activities related to drug use, control, inventory and billing.
- Manage systems for storage, preparation and dispensing of medicinal agents using appropriate techniques while following the health systems policies; effectively supervise personnel who may be involved in these processes.
- Collaboratively work with all individuals involved in oncology medication dispensing and use process as appropriate.
- Coordinate the delivery of clinical pharmaceutical care to assigned areas.
- Assists in training and professional development of staff pharmacists, residents, technicians, nursing and medical staff.
- Develop appropriate, safe, and cost-effective drug therapy protocol/policies related to oncology.
- Develop pharmacist schedule and supervise pharmacists and technicians in the performance of their assigned duties on a daily basis and prioritizes tasks in the event of staffing shortages
- Coordinate the selection and safe use of alternative oncology medications in response to medication shortages.
- Facilitate the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective oncology medication-use issues in collaboration with the medical staff.
- Liaison with Medical Staff Office and Marketing to develop physician communications/education.
- Support the improvement and accomplishment of corporate, division, and facility oncology objectives through interdepartmental teamwork and planning.
- Participate in the quality improvement activities of the department related to oncology, including participation on the medication safety committee
- Establish productive, collaborative relationships with staff members, physicians, and nurses, and within the community.
- Effectively and accurately provide education or in-services on medication-related policies and procedures to healthcare professionals, students, and patients as needed.
- Retrieve, analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific literature in order to provide accurate, concise, applicable, and timely drug information response to healthcare professionals.
- Attend meetings and participate on committees as required.
What qualifications you will need:
- Licensed Pharmacist in the state of Tennessee required.
- ASHP accredited PGY2 oncology residency or equivalent experience required.
- 3-5 years of hospital pharmacy experience in a oncology pharmacist position required.
- Experienced with use of spreadsheet, word processing software, and other pharmacy equipment required.
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree preferred.
