SUMMARY
The Oncology Social Worker provides emotional support, counseling, care coordination, and resource assistance to people affected by cancer. Through JFS's Cancer Care Connection program, this role works with clients, caregivers, healthcare providers, community partners, and JFS staff to help address the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Oncology Social Worker helps ensure that clients and families receive compassionate, person-centered support throughout their cancer journey.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Counseling and Support Services
  • Provide individual counseling and emotional support to cancer patients, caregivers, and family members.
  • Help clients cope with challenges related to diagnosis, treatment, grief, loss, and life changes.
  • Complete assessments to identify client needs, strengths, barriers, and support systems.
  • Use proven counseling techniques to help clients manage stress and improve coping skills.
  • Teach practical strategies that help clients and families adjust to the impact of cancer.
  • Lead the Tikvah After Loss bereavement support group and provide a safe, supportive environment for participants to share experiences and process grief.
Cancer Care Connection Helpline and Resource Support
  • Respond to calls and inquiries from individuals and families seeking support, information, and guidance.
  • Provide education, resource referrals, and assistance connecting clients with medical, financial, social service, and community supports.
  • Help clients address barriers to treatment, such as transportation, insurance issues, financial concerns, caregiving responsibilities, and access to services.
  • Document client contacts, assessments, referrals, and follow-up activities in the agency's case management system and electronic health record.
Community Outreach and Education
  • Represent JFS and the Cancer Care Connection program at community events, health fairs, and outreach activities.
  • Share information about available services with community members, healthcare professionals, and partner organizations.
  • Increase awareness of JFS programs through outreach, education, and relationship building.
  • Work with community partners to improve access to support services for individuals and families affected by cancer.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Participate in team meetings, program planning, and collaborative projects.
  • Prepare monthly reports on client services, outreach activities, and program outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in compliance with agency policies, professional standards, and confidentiality requirements.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) required.
  • Social work license preferred or ability to obtain licensure based on state requirements.
  • Experience in counseling, case management, social work, or related support services preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, documentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, healthcare providers, community organizations, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and client-centered care.
