Job Description Summary

Southwestern Michigan College is seeking qualified adjunct instructors to teach

online Environmental Science courses beginning in the Spring 2027 semester. This position

requires demonstrated experience in online teaching and proficiency with virtual laboratory

instruction. Instructors are expected to create engaging online learning environments, develop or

adapt lab activities suitable for remote delivery and maintain regular accessibility to students.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree or 18 graduate credits in Environmental Science or a closely related field including environmental science coursework or related professional experience
• Demonstrated experience teaching online courses, including familiarity with best practices in remote instruction
• Strong organization and communication skills
• Proficiency with learning management systems (Moodle preferred), email, and general instructional technologies
• Applicants are not required to live within the service area; however, they must maintain permanent residence in either Michigan or Indiana.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in Environmental Science or a related discipline, with previous teaching experience
• Community college or adult learner teaching experience
• Quality Matters (QM) training or certification, or equivalent experience with online course quality standards
• Experience designing or delivering virtual or simulation-based laboratory activities

Other Information

All applicants must demonstrate the ability to promote active and collaborative learning through a variety of teaching methods, as well as relate to students. Excellent organization and communication skills as well as the demonstrated use of instructional technology are required.

A. Hand and Finger Coordination: Ability to perform tasks requiring coordinated

hand and finger movements, including typing, keyboarding, picking, pinching,

and handling small objects.

B. Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word

C. Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.

Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

2. The physical requirements of this position

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of

force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the

human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and

standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

3. The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision

The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing

and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.

4. The conditions the employee will be subject to in this position

None. The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work.)
