Operations Engineer

As member of the Operations team, the heart of the
companyrests in your hands, and your guidance will help us evolve. You’re
responsible for the overall production infrastructure, physical data centers and
cloud-based services. The buck stops with your team for all network and systems
issues. Our backend is Linux with a combination of physical and AWS servers
providing web, application, batch, storage, database, and media management
services. Storage scaling to petabytes, burstable compute, data capture and
analytics, and secure streaming are key attributes of our service. We work on
highly confidential projects, and so you’ll also be exceptionally trustworthy and discreet.

You've supported 24/7 highly available services, and maintained a few 9's of service uptime. You're a confident Linux and network administrator
 
You’ll bring a track record of success building and managing high availability infrastructure services from concept to reality, from technology analysis, vendor selection (with a strong bias for open source), negotiation, design, execution, maintenance, and internal cross-training
 
You'll be working as a core member of a small team dedicated to supporting the needs of the organization
 
You’ll help manage our integration with both public and private networks
 
You'll have a bit of disdain for repeating tasks, and instead live for automation
 
You'll have a natural passion for extending our monitoring, alerting and deployment facilities
 
You’ll collaborate with our Account Management team supporting clients and our Core Services team building the software, and are happy serving both internal and external clients
Responsibilities

Taking a major role in managing the production and R&D infrastructure environments at PIX
 
Design and implement the intelligent evolution of our hybrid cloud architecture, including capacity planning, availability, durability, monitoring and alerts, security, and deployment
 
Ensure we are exceeding our client’s availability expectations (and SLA’s)
 
Knowledge sharing with other team members (local and remote), always aiming to become a smarter, more efficient team
 
Document new processes, and teach others what you know. Schedule demos and training sessions to be the best mentor you can be
 
Participate in the on-call rotation
Requirements

Minimum 5 years operations experience supporting a 24x7 production environment demonstrating increasing responsibilities over time

Must be self motivated and passionate about learning, versed in the latest DevOps best practices

Excellent time management, interpersonal, and automation skills

Experience working on optimization of an AWS based LAMP stack

Strong skills installing, administering and troubleshooting server hardware

Strong scripting skills, geared towards automating tasks. (Python, Ruby, Bash)

Strong skills in Linux system administration and standard services (HTTPS, DNS, SMTP, NFS)

Deep understanding of networking, routing, and security concepts (ideally: BGP, OSPF, VRF-lite)

Familiarity with configuration management tools (Chef, Puppet)

Strong skills working with MySQL/RDS database systems

Dedication to monitoring and alerting systems. We currently use Nagios, DataDog, Graphite, Statsd, and collectd

Experience working with deployment systems (Code Deploy, Bamboo, Jenkins)

Comfortable with a mix of team and individual work

Experience configuring and managing Amazon Web Service deployments

Must be willing to work at the HQ location in San Francisco with occasional travel to remote data centers
