Job Description

Serves as administrative manager to OES with responsibility for planning, managing, directing and supervising the daily functions and operations of the department including supervision of budgets and office managers. Assists the chair to ensure department meets all academic, research and program goals and collaborates with the Graduate Program Director and chief department advisor to implement educational goals for the department. Responsibilities also include developing and implementing policies and procedures for departmental personnel, facilities/space utilization and equipment/supplies used for teaching, research and administration and for departmental supervision of repairs, alterations, and modifications to facilities, and management of equipment.

Demonstrated ability to effectively oversee office, departmental operations, processes and staff supervision. Ability to effectively serve customers while producing work to meet deadlines. Working knowledge of effective supervisory techniques. Considerable knowledge of effective operations management processes. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing including the ability to interpret and explain policy and procedure to diverse customers. Working knowledge of basic accounting/bookkeeping techniques including financial reporting and data management and state procedures. Considerable knowledge of effective customer service and problem resolution techniques. Demonstrated ability to use a variety of software to efficiently produce professional documents including spreadsheets, database, word processing, e-mail and outreach programs.

Considerable experience managing an operation in a business setting. Working experience supervising staff.

Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)

Formal management courses. Considerable experience managing/oversight of complex budget. Some knowledge of equipment used in teaching and research laboratory utilities and space requirements . Some knowledge of supporting computer hardware and software for academic and research purposes. Working knowledge of ODU policies on space usage and safety. Working knowledge f educational development activities to establish policy, procedures, educational content and schedules for outreach programs. Considerable experience in an academic setting.
