Job Duties:

• Coordinate activities of ILWU workers engaged in all phases of stevedoring operations. Under the direction of management, provide comprehensive tactical work direction to the workforce at the beginning of each assignment during the execution of operational plans; provide assessment of the work upon completion of the vessel or terminal operation.
• Organize and structure gangs to properly execute operations plans.
• Supervise positive and productive relations with union and non-union labor while ensuring cargo is efficiently managed according to customers' needs.
• Understand and accurately develop vessel schedules, production, payroll-related, safety and other reports using computer systems or manual processes as directed. Distributes reporting to appropriate management staff, customers and others as required on a timely basis.
• Coordinate with and advise customers, shipper, stevedores, agents, and vessel staff in relation to the most efficient, cost effective, and safe methods of loading cargo.
• Review, monitor and report on cargo vessel production.
• Coordinate handoff to incoming supervisors during shift changes.
• Develop and maintain positive customer relations by understanding customer needs, contract terms and conditions, and by implementing plans to address those needs.
• Ensure compliance with area accident prevention, safety and workers' compensation procedures and requirements. Identify, report and control hazards.
• Ensure that the workforce functions effectively as a team. Practice effective and regular communication and leadership to encourage high employee morale.
• Keep management informed of work status and problems as they arise.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of all applicable union contracts; ensure adherence to policy and contract procedures.
• Maintain thorough understanding of operational procedures and systems. Provide feedback for improvement of procedures.
• Provide feedback to management regarding equipment requirements to efficiently execute the vessel or stevedoring plan in the most cost-effective manner.
• Review and evaluate the performance of employees under his/her supervision, and impose corrective action when circumstances warrant within parameters of contract language and grievance machinery.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to competently perform job duties described above.

• High school diploma/equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in Maritime operations, or related field such as Business preferred.

• 5+ years of related marine terminal operations experience employees required.

• 1+ year experience supervising staff; supervision of union-represented employees strongly preferred.

• Thorough knowledge of port practices with regards to ILWU labor contracts.

• Thorough knowledge of terminal operations, stevedore operations for break bulk, ro-ro, and/or container vessels, and cargo stowage restrictions with regards to hazardous cargo and stability considerations of vessels.

• Working knowledge of applicable safety and accident prevention codes and regulations and related industry governmental regulations.

• Proficiency with use of operations management software, including reporting functions.

• Ability to make critical, time-sensitive decisions effectively under pressure.

• Ability to drive automatic and manual transmission vehicles safely.

• Ability to execute work effectively with minimal supervision.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

• Good organizational and multi-tasking skills.

• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products at the following levels:

• Word, Excel, Outlook: Basic level of skill

• Valid state issued driver's license, and clean DMV record.

• Transportation Worker Identity Credential required within 90 days of hire.

• Available for shift work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Capabilities Required:

• The physical ability to safely work on a ship and in a terminal, accessing all areas of a vessel by climbing ladders to access hatches, cranes, equipment and storage spaces.
• Lift/Carry objects - up to 50 pounds
• Able to work at heights up to 80 feet above ground
• Bend, Crouch, Crawl, Kneel/Squat
• Reach, Reach above head
• Climb - stairs, ladders, into/out of vehicles, vessel hatches requiring both legs, both arms
• Perform work while standing
• Work in confined spaces
• Turn/move/pull/push objects using moderate force
• Walk - uneven surfaces, incline/decline
• Vision sufficient to read instructions and use/manipulate fine equipment, see and navigate near fast-moving equipment and to operate vehicles on busy terminal safely.
• Hearing sufficient to hear and understand spoken instructions and hear approaching/moving equipment in environments with moderate levels of noise.
