Training and Certification is responsible for the training of locomotive engineers, conductors and assistant conductors and other functions within the Transportation Division. The department conducts and oversees training programs that enable employees to meet regulatory mandates and develop necessary job skills.

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Locomotive Engineers, the Operations Trainer-ASLE will train and supervise locomotive engineer candidates to ensure their compliance with Metra schedules and standards as established by the Training and Certification Department, as well as Safety Rules and 49 CFR 240 and 242 regulations governing the certification of locomotive engineers. The primary duties include: Monitor, critique, and evaluate candidate's performance through the use of the Locomotive Simulator in a control setting. Monitor the continuing Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) mandated education of currently certified locomotive engineers by providing classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Conduct safety meetings to reinforce Metra and FRA safety rules. Assist in monitoring the performance of training engineers responsible for candidate engineers. Participate in corporate testing functions and initiatives. Coordinate team's day-to-day activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor performance, and provide guidance and training, but is not a supervisor. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
