    Job Description

    1.0 Job Summary

    Perform a variety of activities in support of the operation of a wastewater treatment plant including collecting test samples, collecting blanket reading, monitoring plant operations, and maintenance tasks. 

    Must be completely familiar with the duties of all the Operator II positions. May also perform a variety of activities in support of the operation of wastewater receiving station and operations of a wastewater treatment plant.

    These tasks include monitoring dumping of wastes by vacuum trucks including the inspection of wastes.

    Maintain equipment, monitor flows, analyze samples, and input waste ticket information for billing.

    2.0 Typical Duties and Responsibilities

    Collect samples for various tests of plant processes, maintain sample stations.   

    Collect blanket readings. Monitor plant operations by comparisons of data from pH and D.O test. Maintain records of plant operations by recording data from tests and instruments.

    Perform minor maintenance activities such as valve, adjustment and grit pan cleaning. Communicate with lab personnel, maintenance personnel, vendors, and other plant operators. Must be able to develop the ability to relieve Operator III.

    Prepare samples for transfer to central lab and commercial lab.

    Develop and review sampling SOP’s. Monitor operations of wastewater treatment plant including inspection of equipment, trouble shooting of problems, calculating flows, removal formulas, and other plant conditions, and effluent quality.  

    Participate with shift operators in the tasks associated with plant operations as necessary.  

    Maintain safe working environment in plant.  Analyze instrument readings and laboratory test results to evaluate plant operations.  

    Communicate with maintenance personnel, lab techs, operators, and customers concerning plant operations. Create and review SOP’s.   

    Record and monitor tank levels. Maintain both sump and transfer pumps, lines to and from tanks and transfer line to WT.

    Enter customer data including, company, gallons received, and truck number. Sign and stamp all customer manifests for each load.

    Perform facility maintenance activities including cleaning office building and maintaining grounds and driveway areas. 

    Properly clean pumps when clogged. Clean and maintain the septic units and rock catchers. 

    Maintain customer records and input new customers in the WITS system.

    Print out daily and monthly customer reports.

    Keep a daily log of tank levels, equipment issues, and general records.

    Screen customer calls and check authorized users list to dump per truck. Perform other related duties as assigned.

    3.0 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of the wastewater treatment process and receiving station including the operation of pumps and motors, piping, and electrical equipment. Knowledge of the operation of the sludge dewatering unit and the application of polymer.    Knowledge of the principles and practices for the safe operation of a wastewater treatment plant.    Ability to read memoranda, daily work schedules, log sheets, technical manuals, and procedures.    Ability to perform mathematical calculations necessary to compute plant flows and sample test results.    Ability to write memoranda, log sheets, work orders, and other reports.      Ability to operate equipment such as hoist, forklift, club cart and yard mule     Ability to operate test equipment such as blanket indicator, ammonia meter, and hand-held pH meter.      Ability to operate assigned vehicle.  Ability to use hand tools and air wrenches.  Ability to communicate orally both in person and by telephone and radio.

    4.0 Environmental conditions

    Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in extreme heat (100°F) and cold (32°F) in all weather conditions.     

    Work involves exposure to potential noise, mechanical, electrical fume/odor, chemical, and toxic waste hazards with proper precautionary procedures.

    5.0 Education, certification, and experience required

    High school diploma or equivalent.    

    Experience in wastewater treatment plant operations is desired

    Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s license.

    It is preferred the operator II hold a class “D” certification while continuing education in the wastewater field to obtain a class “C” certification.

    Ability to possess a TWIC card and necessary HASC cards.

    6.0 Physical requirements

    Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch/stoop, squat, twist upper body, and climb ladders while performing various job functions such as inspecting plant, taking samples, and adjusting valves.

    Ability to grasp with hands and manipulate tools, pumps, and heavy barrels. Ability to grasp with hands and manipulate glass sample bottles.

    7.0 Additional requirements per location

    7.1 Vince Bayou Receiving Station and/or Washburn Tunnel Facility  

    7.2 Knowledge of standard testing procedures for taking samples, running analysis of TOC, ammonia, D.O. and TSS.

    7.3 Knowledge of WinLIMS, FMS, and Wonderware HMI interface programs.

    7.4 Ability to operate equipment such as hoist, forklift, club cart and yard mule.

    7.5 Ability to possess a TWIC card and necessary HASC cards.

    Salary Range

    $25.59 - $32.96
