JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Water Pollution Control Authority Executive Director or designee, performs skilled work in the operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities of the Water Pollution Control Authority; works evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends; performs related work as directed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Works under Shift Foreman or designee to operate and adjust plant equipment such as pumps, pump wells, motors, belt filter presses, gravity belt thickeners, valves, electrical disconnects, generators, rakes, classifiers, chemical feed, and overhead cranes.
Operates dewatering equipment including, but not limited to, Polymer system, GBTs, BFPs, slides gates, records solid tests, change trailers & polymer totes, and dump rag & grit tubs.
Takes samples at specified times, maintains records, and signs chain of custody as directed by Shift Foreman.
Observes and notifies the Shift Foreman of unusual conditions regarding plant operations.
Ensures plant chemical systems are operational including, but not limited to, connecting and disconnecting tanks, adjusting feed rates, taking chemical deliveries, and flushing lines.
Interprets plant conditions through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
Operates commercial vehicles on the plant to facilitate dumping rag & grit tubs.
Cleans and performs minor preventive maintenance (PM) to Trojan Ultra Violet (UV) system.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of the plant grounds including, but not limited to, painting, cleaning, and general landscaping; mows lawn, sprays & pull weeds; shovels, plows, and blows snow; applies ice melt and cleans walkways during snow storm events.
Conducts comprehensive cleaning of the Operation Building including, but not limited to, conference rooms, offices, workstations, bathrooms, locker rooms, and common areas.
Assists maintenance personnel in repairing plant equipment including, but not limited to, cleaning, disconnecting equipment, and starting equipment back up.
Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required; practices safe work procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
Good knowledge of simple math and geometric calculations.
Good electrical and mechanical equipment knowledge, including pumps, motors, meters, and gauges.
Ability to perform manual tasks in a potentially hazardous environment.
Ability to quickly identify and resolve issues that arise during wastewater treatment operations.
Ability to pay attention; having an eye for detail in order to accurately monitor and record plant information.
Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with coworkers and supervisors, and to follow written and verbal instructions.
Knowledge of workplace safety protocols and procedures, particularly in a hazardous environment.
Familiarity with basic software and computers.
Ability to work well with others and to adapt to changing circumstances.
Ability to read and understand written material.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school, a high school equivalency program, or trade school.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Must pass a comprehensive medical examination prior to employment. Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License by the end of the probationary period. At the time of application, possession of a valid Driver's License.
SPECIAL NOTE
Employees will work in this classification for nine (9) months. Upon successful completion of the nine (9) months probationary period and possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), promotion without examination will be made to the classification of Plant Operator I.
Employees are required to obtain their Class I Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire date.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: There will be an examination on a date to be determined, which will be weighted at 100% and will test for mechanical aptitude. Notice of examination will be sent via email only.
