Position Summary The Ophthalmic Electrophysiologist performs specialized diagnostic ocular electrophysiology testing to support the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a wide range of eye conditions. Working independently under physician referral, this role conducts comprehensive electrophysiological examinations using advanced diagnostic instrumentation, verifies testing appropriateness, reviews patient medical histories, and ensures accurate test administration, documentation, and reporting. The Ophthalmic Electrophysiologist educates and supports patients throughout the testing process, maintains and calibrates highly specialized equipment, ensures compliance with quality, safety, and infection prevention standards, and collaborates closely with ophthalmologists and clinical staff to support efficient patient care. This position also contributes to continuous quality improvement, professional development, and clinical research through participation in research projects, scientific publications, presentations, and the advancement of electrophysiology practices.
Key Responsibilities
At physician’s order, performs specialized ocular testing on patients using complex electrophysiological instrumentation to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing patient ocular illness.
Performs comprehensive clinical ocular testing on patients using electrophysiology instrumentation within physician order and referral. Demonstrate proficiency in performing all ocular electrophysiology procedures.
Verifies appropriateness of referral, contacting physician as necessary; performs testing autonomously at physician referral; including instillation of pupil dilation drops and electrode placement. Reviews patient medical history/record and selects, administers and interprets a wide variety of specialized tests and measurements.
Provides information and instructions to patients about how the exam is performed and what is required of the patient. Establish relationships with patients and attend to physical and emotional needs.
Prepares equipment generated reports, correspondence and other materials for internal/external referring physicians and other providers as needed according to established documentation standards.
Maintains records of tests conducted, archiving computer/test results as needed.
Maintain liaison with Ophthalmology administrative and clinical staff regarding scheduling and other technological matters.
Responsible for proper maintenance of equipment (cleaning, calibration, sterilization, etc.). Practice sterile techniques and prevent cross-contamination.
Maintains supplies and quality control in accordance with hospital, departmental and area standards.
Assist with preventive maintenance of equipment to minimize technical malfunction. Make appropriate adjustments to equipment and patients in the event of an equipment failure.
Develops clinical knowledge and skills through participation in professional organizations, attending continuing education programs and other related internal and external resources.
May recommend, initiate, and participate in research projects, prepares journal articles and conducts presentations at seminars and workshops.
Participate in research projects and scientific publications; contribute to data collection for research and scientific publications through clinical electrophysiology examinations; formulate scientific publications singularly in cooperation with physicians.

Experience:
Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through a Bachelor’s degree; science, clinical-based preferred but not required.
