UPMC is hiring an Ophthalmic Technician Assistant to join the Department of Ophthalmology through a unique, state-approved apprenticeship program. This opportunity is part of the only state-approved Ophthalmic Technician apprenticeship program in Pennsylvania and is designed to provide hands-on training, education, and career development for individuals interested in building a career in eye care. The apprenticeship combines on-the-job learning with structured training to develop the clinical and technical skills needed to support ophthalmologists and ophthalmic staff in delivering exceptional patient care. Apprentices will gain experience in patient intake, preparing patients for examinations, obtaining medical histories, assisting with diagnostic testing, maintaining exam rooms and equipment, and supporting clinic operations while working alongside experienced ophthalmic professionals. The program start date is September 14, 2026, with the majority of training taking place at the Mercy Pavilion on the UPMC Mercy campus. Travel to UPMC Vision Institute satellite offices is required as part of scheduled training rotations to provide a comprehensive learning experience across multiple practice settings. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, participants will have the opportunity to advance within the Ophthalmic Technician career ladder.
