The ophthalmic technician supports a high-volume retina clinic by preparing patients for their visits, documenting clinical encounters, and ensuring accurate and thorough updates to the electronic medical record (EMR). This role plays a key part in delivering efficient, high-quality patient care in a fast-paced ophthalmology environment and offers exposure to advanced clinical practice and potential progression into clinical research.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for their visits by gathering and recording vital signs, medical history, and family history in the EMR system.
• Update and maintain accurate patient information in the EMR, ensuring all data is complete and correctly entered.
• Document physician-patient encounters in the EMR system, acting as a medical scribe during the visit.
• Perform work-ups after doctor visits, following clinical protocols and physician instructions.
• Communicate clearly with patients regarding the care plan and instructions provided by the physician.
• Support a high volume of patient care, assisting in the management of 80-100 patients per day in a busy retina clinic.
• Collaborate with a team of clinic staff to ensure smooth patient flow and timely completion of all clinical tasks.
• Handle data entry and medical documentation with speed and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
• Adhere to all clinic policies and procedures, including professional standards for appearance and conduct.

Essential Skills

• Experience in medical assisting or a similar patient care role, with familiarity in clinical workflows.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and basic medical documentation practices.
• Proficiency using electronic medical record (EMR) systems for data entry and clinical documentation.
• Background in ophthalmology or a willingness to quickly learn ophthalmic concepts and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to provide patient care in a high-volume clinical setting.
• Accurate and efficient typing and data entry skills.
• Ability to multitask effectively while maintaining attention to detail.
• High energy and a driven, "Type A" personality suited to a fast-paced environment.
• Comfort working as a medical scribe or in a closely related role, with 1+ year of on-site scribing or associated medical experience preferred.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related health science field, or 1+ year of experience in the medical field.
• Interest in ophthalmology and retina care, with the desire to grow within a specialized clinical environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with patients and clinical staff.
• Ability to thrive in a high-volume setting, supporting 80-100 patients per day.

Work Environment

This position is based in a busy retina clinic environment with an extremely fast-paced workflow, where the team may see 80-100 patients per day. The schedule runs Monday through Friday, with shifts typically falling between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and actual start and end times adjusted based on clinic needs. Training takes place at an administrative building before transitioning to clinic-based work. The role operates within a team of approximately 8-24 clinical staff, with each physician supported by a dedicated group of eight clinic team members. Employees are assigned to three primary clinics, with a home clinic in a high-volume location and occasional support at other clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance, and mileage is reimbursed when traveling to clinics outside the assigned three. The environment offers exposure to high-level clinical research trials and provides opportunities for career growth into clinical research roles, supported by annual continued education funding. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, short and well-groomed nails, and hair that is tied back to maintain a professional and safe clinical appearance.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
