Job Description

Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician

Job Description

The ophthalmic technician serves as a dedicated medical scribe within a high-volume retina clinic, documenting physician visits in the electronic medical record (EMR) system in real time. This role supports multiple physicians by accurately recording patient histories, exam findings, assessments, and treatment plans, ensuring thorough and precise medical documentation for every patient encounter. The position is integral to maintaining efficient clinic flow in a fast-paced environment that can see 80-100 patients per day and involves traveling between several clinic locations to provide consistent documentation support.

Responsibilities

  • Document physician visits in the EMR system in real time, capturing accurate and comprehensive medical information during each patient encounter.
  • Serve as a scribe for multiple physicians, adapting to individual documentation styles and preferences while maintaining consistency and high quality.
  • Record detailed patient histories, ophthalmic exam findings, physician assessments, and treatment plans as directed by the physician.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of all medical documentation, including medical terminology, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment details.
  • Perform precise data entry related to ophthalmology and retina care, following established clinic protocols and EMR standards.
  • Support a high volume of patient care in an extremely fast-paced environment, helping physicians manage clinics that may see 80-100 or more patients per day.
  • Collaborate closely with clinic staff and a team of other scribes to maintain efficient clinic flow and optimize patient throughput.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and comply with all healthcare documentation, privacy, and security standards.
  • Travel between assigned clinics several days per week to provide consistent documentation support across multiple locations.
  • Participate in training sessions at the administrative facility and apply learned processes, workflows, and standards in daily work.
  • Contribute to a team-based environment where each physician is supported by a full clinic staff, including multiple scribes and technicians.
  • Demonstrate strong multitasking abilities while managing continuous patient encounters and documentation demands.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in a life science field.
  • At least 1 year of on-site medical scribing experience; remote scribing experience is not considered for this role.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and real-time documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and medical documentation standards.
  • Experience in patient care settings, preferably in ophthalmology or retina care.
  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills with strong typing abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong multitasking skills and the ability to manage continuous patient encounters.
  • Driven, self-motivated approach to supporting physicians and patients.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to healthcare privacy regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ophthalmic or retina clinic experience is preferred and considered a strong asset.
  • Interest in clinical research and willingness to pursue career progression into research-focused roles.
  • Comfort working as part of a large clinical team, often with 8-24 colleagues supporting multiple physicians.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different clinic environments and physician documentation styles.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing high volumes of documentation.
  • Desire for ongoing professional development, supported by annual continued education opportunities.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, Monday through Friday role within a very fast-paced retina clinic environment. Typical clinic hours range from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with individual schedules set within this window based on clinic needs; starting at the earliest time or working to the latest time is rare and generally occurs only when the clinic is extremely busy. The position functions as a float role among nearby clinic locations, with travel expected about three days per week and transportation provided; travel time is paid. Training takes place at an administrative building in the Galleria area, after which the ophthalmic technician works on teams of 8-24 colleagues, with each physician supported by a full clinic staff. Employees are generally tied to three primary clinics, with a home clinic in Sugar Land, one of the busiest locations that can see more than 100 patients per day, and additional support provided to other nearby clinics as needed. Schedules are provided two weeks in advance, and on rare occasions, typically for training, staff may be asked to work at a clinic outside their usual three, with mileage reimbursed for those additional locations. The culture emphasizes high performance, clinical excellence, and opportunities for growth, including exposure to advanced clinical research and annual continued education support. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs, short and well-groomed nails, and all hair securely tied back to maintain a professional, safe, and hygienic clinical appearance.
