About the Role:Retina Specialists of Southern Arizona is seeking a motivated, customer-focused and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician Trainee/Front Desk Coordinator to join our dedicated team in Tucson, AZ. This position features a
dual-phase career path: you will start by mastering front desk operations to understand patient flow, scheduling, and practice fundamentals, then transition into a structured clinical training program to become a fully proficient
Ophthalmic Technician. No prior medical or eye care experience is required; a strong willingness to learn, high attention to detail, and a patient and friendly attitude are essential.

Phase 1: Front Desk Coordinator Responsibilities- Patient Check-In/Out: Greet patients warmly, manage registration, verify demographic data, and ensure accurate check-in protocols
- Insurance & Billing: Verify medical insurance information is correct prior to appointments and collect co-pays or balances
- Scheduling: Coordinate and schedule patient appointments according to clinical templates and provider guidelines
- Communication: Assist with answering high-volume phone calls, respond to patient inquiries, confirm upcoming appointments, and manage patient flow
Phase 2: Ophthalmic Technician Responsibilities- Graduation to clinical duties follows successful front desk mastery and internal training modules
- Patient Work-Ups: Interview patients to record accurate ocular and systemic medical histories
- Preliminary Testing: Measure visual acuity, check intraocular pressure (tonometry) and dilate patients
- Diagnostic Imaging: Operate specialized clinical equipment such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fundus photography under supervision
- Scribing & Charting: Accompany physicians during exams and procedures to document findings and treatment plans accurately into Electronic Health Records (EHR)
- Patient Education: Guide patients on the proper usage of eye drops and post-operative instructions
Qualifications & Skills Requirements:- Detail-Oriented: High level of accuracy with strong organizational and data entry skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; medical or ophthalmic training is a plus
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication, empathy, and a team-oriented mindset when working with colleagues and patients of all ages
- Technical Aptitude: Basic computer literacy and the ability to learn medical software and precise diagnostic machinery quickly
- Work Ethic: Detail-oriented, punctual, adaptable, ability to multi-task in a fast-paced clinical environment
