The facility provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services including primary care, surgery, mental health, rehabilitation, and specialty care including a well-equipped Eye Care / Optometry clinic. Optician - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • Fabricate, fit, and dispense eyeglasses and other optical devices as prescribed by ophthalmologists and optometrists.

  • Interpret and accurately fill optical prescriptions, ensuring proper lens type, power, and frame selection for each patient.

  • Take precise facial and optical measurements including pupillary distance, segment height, vertex distance, and frame dimensions.

  • Adjust, repair, and maintain eyeglasses and frames to ensure proper fit and patient comfort.

  • Educate patients on proper use, care, and maintenance of their optical devices.

  • Operate and maintain optical laboratory equipment used in the fabrication and finishing of lenses.

  • Verify completed lenses for accuracy using lensometers and other precision instruments.

  • Maintain inventory of optical supplies, frames, and lenses; order materials as needed.

  • Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other eye care professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

  • Document all patient interactions, orders, and dispensing records accurately in the electronic health record system.




Optician - REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold current American Board of Opticianry (ABO) Certification.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited opticianry program preferred.

  • Must possess a current, valid state license to practice opticianry (if required by the state of practice).

  • Minimum of two years of experience in ophthalmic dispensing, lens fabrication, or a related optical field.

  • Proficiency in the use of optical instruments including lensometers, pupillometers, and lens edging equipment.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with a diverse veteran patient population.

  • Must pass a background investigation for federal facility access.
