  • Logistics:
    • Pay: $23.48 /hour
    • Contract Type: 1 base year with 4, 1-year option periods
    • Schedule: Monday - Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm
    • Location: Perry Point, MD
  • Requirements:
    • Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently, without sponsorship.
    • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • High school diploma or equivalent required. An Associate's in Ophthalmic Technology is a plus.
    • Must be certified by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO).
    • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
    • Previous experience with the VA is a plus.

What does a typical day look like for the Optician?

You will:

  • Monday - Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm No call, weekends, or federal holidays.
  • Shall be responsible for helping Veteran beneficiaries by greeting them, determining lifestyle needs for prescription eyewear, assisting with frame selection, and making recommendations.
  • Verify eyeglass prescription specifications provided by the VAMC Optometry or Ophthalmology clinics.
  • Fill medically necessary eyeglass prescriptions as written by the privileged VA eye care provider.
  • Ensure medical justification is within prescriptions for any add-ons.
  • Communicate with primary eye care providers for prescription updates.
  • Conduct on-site optical fitting and dispensary services. Perform measurements for pupillary distances, segment heights, base curves and review final frame selection choice with the Veteran beneficiary.
  • Making minor repairs and adjustments to eyewear as needed.

What qualifications do you look for?

If selected, candidates will need to complete credentialing and onboarding requirements consistent with VA medical staff processes.
