Statement of Primary Purpose

The Program Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the program, including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, curriculum design, instruction, academic advising and general effectiveness of the Opticianry program.

Classification

Curriculum faculty, full-time, exempt.

This position is required to work the 9-month academic year schedule.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

·         Ensure the program and courses are up-to-date, current in technology, and in compliance with state and national accreditation standards.

·         Oversee the operation of the Optical Dispensary.

·         Lead curriculum and course updates and revisions.

·         Coordinate program course offerings and schedules.

·         Assist in budget formation and monitor expenditures for travel (local &/or overnight), supplies, equipment, and programmatic library holdings

·         Inventory equipment and supplies.

·         Maintain an advisory committee, including: coordinating membership, facilitating annual meetings, maintaining records, and following through on advisory recommendations for program improvements.

·         Complete or assist with program reports, including but not limited to annual program review, outcomes assessment, and advanced planning document.

·         Maintain programmatic accreditation, including: writing self-study reports, compiling and submitting annual reports, preparing for site visits, and following up on accreditation recommendations.

·         Prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with course outlines and the published course schedule.

·         Maintain teaching course load in compliance with the college faculty workload policy.

·         Appropriately challenge, engage, support, and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning in a professional, respectful environment.

·         Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus and program objectives.

·         Maintain accurate records for each course taught.

·         Prepare, review, and update course outlines on a regular basis.

·         Assist with student recruitment, advising, and retention.

·         Serve on college and division committees and attend meetings..

·         Participate in college events and activities, including commencement ceremonies.

·         Cooperate in scheduled student evaluations of the instructor and courses.

·         Keep regular posted office hours in accordance with college policy.

·         Submit all college reports in an accurate, timely fashion.

·         Attend instructor and departmental meetings as scheduled.

·         Be responsible for professional development and maintaining professional competence.

·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and others.

·         Maintain credentials as required by accrediting agencies and regulatory bodies.

·         Demonstrate and maintain current subject area knowledge.

·         Work with students in the laboratory to assist them in developing skill proficiencies

·         Adhere to academic policies and procedures.

·         Assist the dean with faculty recruitment, onboarding, training, and supervision.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned to support the program and the college's mission.

Minimum Qualifications

Education       

Bachelor’s Degree in a healthcare leadership or related field.

Knowledge and Skills           

Required: Program coordinator must have a minimum of three years experience in ophthalmic optics.

Demonstrate proficiency in program planning, curriculum design, instruction, and academic advising;

Preferred: Two years experience, as an instructor at an opticianry program.

 Physical Demands   

Must be able to use and demonstrate all instructional and lab equipment.

Licensing Requirement       

Credentialed in equivalent training and preparation. (Optician, Optometrist, Ophthalmologist)

Valid NC Driver’s License.

Working Conditions and Environment

Routine travel in the college service area and to clinical sites beyond the service area. Occasional overnight travel outside the service area for professional development and meetings.

Equipment Operation

Able to demonstrate and operate all equipment required to perform the duties of an Optician.
