POSITION SUMMARY

The Lafayette School Corporation is seeking an enthusiastic and student-centered Orchestra Director to lead the orchestra program at Tecumseh Junior High School while supporting orchestra instruction and performances at the intermediate and high school levels as needed. This position is responsible for developing students musical skills, fostering a lifelong appreciation of music, and building a comprehensive orchestra program that emphasizes excellence, creativity, and collaboration.

The successful candidate will inspire students through engaging instruction, meaningful performance opportunities, and strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues. This position offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with the districts music department to ensure a cohesive and vertically aligned orchestra program serving students in grades 5-12.

POSITION DETAILS

Position Title: Orchestra Director

Location: Tecumseh Junior High School

Contract: Regular Teacher Contract (181 Days)

Reports To: Building Principal

Salary: In accordance with the Lafayette School Corporation Teacher Salary Schedule

Additional Compensation: Eligible for applicable Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) stipends associated with concerts, performances, and other approved extracurricular responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Valid Indiana teaching license.
  • Music teaching license with preference given to candidates holding Instrumental Music licensure covering grades 5-12, or the ability to obtain appropriate licensure.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and student performance development.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, students, and families.

Preferred

  • Experience directing middle or secondary orchestra programs.
  • Experience planning and conducting concerts, festivals, and community performances.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple grade levels to develop a comprehensive orchestra program.
  • Knowledge of current instructional practices and technology integration in music education.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Orchestra Director will:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based orchestra instruction that promotes student growth and musical excellence.
  • Direct all Tecumseh Junior High orchestra ensembles and prepare students for concerts, festivals, and other performances.
  • Assist with orchestra instruction, rehearsals, and performances at the intermediate and high school levels as needed to support a unified district orchestra program.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment that encourages musical achievement and personal growth.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.
  • Develop students technical proficiency, music literacy, ensemble performance skills, and appreciation for music.
  • Collaborate with fellow music educators to ensure curriculum alignment and successful student transitions between grade levels.
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and administrators regarding student progress, performances, and program expectations.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, inventory, and performance documentation.
  • Organize and supervise concerts, performances, adjudicated events, festivals, and other musical activities.
  • Assist with instrument inventory, music library organization, and equipment maintenance.
  • Model professionalism, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Support school-wide initiatives and participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and district activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or district administration.
