Orthopedic Tech Medical Assistant (MA) - Full Time

Position Purpose:

The Orthopedic Technician will provide support through a variety of tasks related to patient care management, organization and communication. Maintains all applicable KHI Policies and Procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Escorts patient to exam room and prepares patient for exam including vital signs, history, and reason for seeking care
• Cross trains in data entry, balancing of accounts, charges fees and collect payments due.
• Schedules/confirms appointments
• Maintains and facilitates communication between patients, family and clinical staff.
• Reports as necessary to Public Health at direction of provider
• Maintains work area including exam rooms, supplies, medication and immunizations
• Performs CLIA waived lab tests and obtains specimens
• Performs proficiency testing and runs controls for waived tests
• May perform venipuncture
• Participates in division meetings
• Responsible for patient care under the direct supervision (in the office suite or exam room) of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner.
• Reports as necessary to Public Health at direction of provider. Maintain work area including exam rooms, supplies, medication and immunizations. Participate in clinical division meetings.
• Applies, adjusts and removes casts, splints, immobilization devices and traction
• Measures and fits patients for braces and other orthopedic devices

Qualifications

Education:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent
• If LPN: Graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program

Experience:

Certification:

• BLS through the American Heart Association
• Current and Valid Registered Orthopedic Technologist Certification (due within 1 (one) year of hire)
• If Medical Assist, must meet one of the following criteria:

Has attended an approved medical assistant training program, a copy of the diploma or transcripts are on file, by one of the following:

a. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs; or

b. The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools

An unapproved training program and successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute and a copy of that certification is on file.

Was directly supervised by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours prior to February 2000. (Letter from physician, physician group, or physician assistant must be on file)

Has completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States and a copy of that certificate is on file.

Has completed an unapproved medical assistant training program and was employed as a medical assistant after program completion, prior to February of 2000.

Licensure: • If LPN: Current, valid Arizona LPN license or compact state LPN/LVN license

Preferences

Experience: One to two years; experience as a medical assistant or LPN in a clinical outpatient setting

Work Requirements

• Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors
• Incumbent must be capable of consistently reaching and/or working above and below shoulder level, lifting up to 50 pounds
• Capable of walking or being on feet 90% of time per day with frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, standing
• Capable of sitting at desk 10% of the time per day; communicating using telephone
