Summary:

The (Certified) Orthoptist is responsible for evaluating and treating children and adults with ocular motility disorders. Working in a clinical setting to access patients with the use of retinoscopy, ocular motility and binocular vision including but not limited to amblyopic, convergence insufficiency and accommodative esotropia. Familiar with sensorimotor evaluation and measurement for pre- and post-surgical strabismus and other complaints relating to other binocular function. The Certified Orthoptist performs a broad range of duties related to the delivery of care to adult and pediatric patients seen within the Department of Ophthalmology.

Responsibilities:

1. Perform comprehensive orthoptic assessments, including visual acuity, ocular motility, and binocular function testing.

2. Diagnose and manage patients with strabismus, amblyopia, diplopia, and other eye movement or binocular vision disorders.

3. Develop and implement treatment plans, including vision therapy and patching regimens.

4. Collaborate with ophthalmologists in the planning and follow-up of surgical procedures when needed.

5. Monitor patient progress and adapt treatment plans as necessary.

6. Educate patients and families about eye conditions and treatment options.

7. Maintain accurate and thorough patient records in compliance with clinical and legal standards.

8. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and contribute to ongoing clinical audits and research (if applicable).

9. Undertaking visual field assessments and participating in extended role activities, such as special testing, and vision therapy. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and clinical staff.

10. Work in conjunction with staff, residents, fellows to engage in group and/or individual training and educational needs of staff and students when needed; as well as monitors the timelines, accuracy and quality of images, reports, and related work outputs.

11. There will be a research and quality component in the job, and the successful candidate will work with the division director to develop a program of orthoptic and ophthalmic research and quality.

Education and Experience

1. Education: Bachelor's degree and completion of 2-year fellowship in an AOC accredited program required.

2. Licensure: NA

3. Certification: American Orthoptic Council Certification (AOC) required.

4. Years of relevant experience: Minimum 3 years' experience as an Orthoptist required.

5. Years of supervisory experience: NA
