Packaging Lead (5th Shift)

The Packaging Lead reports to the Packaging Manager and will provide mentorship, training, and guidance to Machine Operators to ensure efficiency, safety, and organization in the packaging area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Production Managers with operational issues in the packaging area and other plant areas as needed
  • Support efficient plant operations by monitoring employee performance, product flow, and equipment functionality
  • Assign employees to packaging machines daily based on the production schedule
  • Ensure work order bins remain stocked and organized for machine operators and utility staff
  • Maintain the packaging area in tour-ready condition at all times
  • Monitor employee adherence to dress code, PPE, GMPs, food safety, and all safety rules on a daily basis
  • Report employee performance concerns, safety issues, or product defects immediately to management
  • Model strict compliance with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements to set the standard for the team
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn and operate all packaging equipment within the plant
  • Identify when equipment or process adjustments are required and take appropriate corrective action, including:
    • Adjusting package weights and bag lengths
    • Recognizing and correcting heat-related issues
    • Loading and adjusting tape machines for different products
    • Entering labels into the system and threading label machines
    • Changing case counts as required
    • Aligning film during film changes and throughout production runs
  • Maintain constant awareness of GMPs, quality standards, and food safety requirements
  • Perform quality checks throughout production runs, including weight verification, seal integrity, and package appearance
  • Clean jaws and knives at every film change
  • Ensure all cases are properly sealed, presentable, and labeled accurately
  • Confirm labels are applied straight and pallets are stacked evenly and securely
  • All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent (for example a GED).
  • The ability to interact and maintain good people skills.
  • Must be motivated, self-starter, willing to train operators and other employees in different areas of the plant.
  • Must be very conscious of work or assignments given.
  • Prior experience of 1+ years working in a manufacturing setting is highly preferable.
  • Packaging Leads typically work 44-50 hours a week which may mean 8 hours or more a day as needed to meet demand. An individual must be able to work within that structure.
  • Must have basic reasoning abilities, to include:
    • Applying common sense in carrying out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
    • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • Ability, beyond basic skill performance levels with Reading, Writing, Mathematical & Computer Functions, to include:
    • Ability to read, write and interpret basic correspondence, including daily production line sheets, operator check off sheets, machine operating instructions, safety instructions and any training materials (including safety instructions for forklifts and handjacks).
    • Ability to understand the data line sheet system and fill out all appropriate paper work.
    • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations: add, subtract and multiply using units of American currency and weight measurement, volume and distance.
    • Ability to operate basic office equipment: telephone system, desktop computers, fax and copy machines.
    • Basic inputs into a computer via keyboard and bar code scans into computer system.
    • Basic abilities with Microsoft Office Software, specifically with Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work with and support others in a positive way.
  • Ability to successfully complete the pre-employment process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with SAP

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position which are required to successfully perform each essential responsibility. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the core responsibilities. These physical demands may include, among other functions:
    • Ability to safely climb up and down stairs, and stand and walk for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to use hand tools and fingering/handling to operate buttons/levers of equipment to perform quality checks during the run, weights, seals and appearance of package by squeezing and physically handling packs.
    • Ability to lift up to 35lbs and carry 25lbs.
    • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, squat and other movements as needed to stack product and to clean/maintain equipment.
    • Ability to balance and reach up and forward up to 48'' and overhead up to 84'' to access equipment, machinery, or product.
    • Ability to adjust the film and keep the vertical lined up at film change and during the run.
    • Must be at least hand jack certified or willing to train and acquire proper certification to prove safe operation. Any forklift certification (Standup, Reach, Sit down) is a plus.
    • Ability to work within the work environment characteristics experienced while performing the essential functions for this job.
      • Frequently working near production machinery and occasionally near hand jacks or forklifts.
      • Frequently working in an environment with variable temperatures.
