Job purpose

The primary responsibility of the Superintendent is to directly oversee the overall operations of the assigned department to ensure accurate, effective, and efficient performance. The Superintendent must ensure that department KPI’s and objectives are being met, with continued focus on safety procedures, sanitation requirements, and standard operating procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Defines, communicates, and delivers departmental goals that are related to Plant and Operations goals. Examples in those related to production rates, budgets, reducing spill loss percentages, reducing ingredient waste, accurate record keeping, improved first pass quality, and maximizing labor productivity.
  • Knowledge of potato processing, SQF standards, FSMA standard and preventative controls and QA procedures.
  • Maintains the records to comply with third party audits, regulatory agencies, and Company reports.
  • Manages the effective cleaning and maintenance of the equipment used in operations.
  • Ensures a safe work environment by emphasizing safety training and safe actions.
  • Recommends, implements and with partnership from Human Resources enforces company policies and procedures.
  • Develop action plans; measuring and analyzing results; initiating corrective actions; minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Implements procedures to increase productivity and decrease downtime through use of lean manufacturing practices and/or Six Sigma practices.
  • Review and report departmental variances regarding productivity, labor scheduling, waste, and other key metrics. Help develop corrective action plans necessary to achieve productivity improvements.
  • Analyzes the production and packaging schedules for the plant and ensures proper sequencing of runs and adequate staffing levels.
  • Develop high performing work teams within department through hands on coaching, training, and engaging team members through ongoing communications of factory changes and performance goal attainment.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and accountability in employee and product safety and maintain an environment that fosters effective communication, teamwork, and positive employee relations.
  • Coordinate and communicate frequently with the Quality Department to ensure that the product is meeting the highest quality standards possible.
  • Ensure applicable Operational Process are followed. Proactively review the established processes, identify improvement opportunities, and make recommendations.
  • Coordinate with planning and budgeting by providing necessary data and expert knowledge in areas of responsibility.
  • Drive employee performance by giving clear directions and expectations, then providing meaningful feedback to aid performance. Evaluate performance and activity of team members and provide appropriate feedback.
  • In partnership with the Operations Manager, make staffing recommendations to ensure appropriate resources are allocated to achieve departmental objectives/projects.
  • Looks long-term at forecast changes in demand for employees due to volume changes and capital projects.
  • Ensure department team members embrace and ensure compliance with established Internal Control System. Cooperate with audit and/or any inquiry from Internal Control function.
  • Maintain Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) on the department to comply with Safe Quality Food (SQF) requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Required Skills

Education A bachelor’s degree in business, Science, Engineering, or a related area from an accredited college/university with a minimum of 3 years food manufacturing and leadership experience in a high-speed manufacturing environment or a minimum of 7 years’ experience

Experience High energy, enthusiastic leader with a demonstrated track record of success in leading a department of 100+ personnel and achieving results. Ability to build structure, create engagement and achieve case attainment in a fast-paced visible department while maintaining effective employee relations.

Language Skills: Exhibits effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to read, comprehend, and compose simple to complex instructions, polices, procedures and correspondence.

Computer Skills: Proficient is using Microsoft applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Work Environment: This position is in a food processing facility. Sixty percent of time will be on the production floor and forty percent of time will be in an office setting.

Demonstrates the self-confidence and maturity to make decisions and solve problems with minimal direction. Organized and able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.

Work Environment

Environmental/Physical aspects the position is located in a food processing facility. Fifty percent of time will be on the manufacturing floor and fifty percent of time will be in an office setting.
