JOB SUMMARY: The staff nurse of the PACU is a registered professional nurse who is responsible for direct and indirect total nursing care of the surgical patient assigned to him/her during a given period of time
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function
a. Responsible for the safety of the patient while in the PACU rooms.
b. Participates as team leader or member in planning and implementing the nursing care for each assigned patient.
c. Utilizes a body of nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct or indirect patient care.
d. Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic technique and procedures as adopted by the department aided by employee knowledge of the basic sciences.
a. Check room for needed supplies and prepares the room for specific patient and procedure
b. Brings patient to room and assumes responsibility for employee safety and well being.
c. Responsible for PACU records, charge slips and patient charts.
d. Knows and assists with proper safe positioning of the patient.
e. Properly identifies, labels and cares for specimens.
f. Obtains and records all medications given
g. Secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed
h. Controls the general "tone" of the PACU.
a. Records used items in proper place and method
b. Reports and records any discrepancy in items.
c. Supervises care, handling, maintenance, storage and ordering of supplies and equipment.
a. Helps with maintenance of records and filing of PACU procedures and policies
b. Assists in establishment and maintenance of procedures, policies and standards.
c. Assists in scheduling and assignment of PACU schedules and personnel.
d. Acts as charge nurse when necessary
a. Checks rooms, material, equipment for proper care and handling.
b. Assures clean and safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazardous and aseptic techniques.
c. Coordinates with supply department to assist in maintenance of high quality and standards of material and all supplies
d. Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis.
a. Assists in orientation of new personnel.
b. Assists others in establishment, direction, maintenance and quality of inservice programs to provide comprehensive educational advancement of all.
c. Provides education of others in the specialty under supervision and direction.
d. Assists in formulation and interpretation of procedures, standards, techniques and education of personnel.
Essential Function
a. Gives feedback to other staff in regard to behavior that is detrimental to:
a. Completes clinical assignments in a timely fashion including maintenance of equipment and supplies
a. Completes non-clinical assignments, tasks, and projects within a pre-established agreed upon time frame.
b. Prioritizes own workload relative to patient care
c. Attends and participates in staff meetings
d. Obtains information presented in staff meetings.
e. Participates in nursing unit goal setting.
f. Attends mandatory inservice programs.
g. Participates in committee work as requested.
a. Understands and functions within the scope of the California nurse Practice Act.
b. Completes Clinical Experience Mastery Sheet by the end of the probationary period
c. Keeps all licenses and certificates current.
d. Plans for personal change and growth based on evaluation and feedback.
e. Participates in setting measurable goals for performance
f. Acquires knowledge or experience to meet goals.
a. Performs other duties within capabilities as assigned by Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduate form an Accredited School of Nursing
Work Experience: Minimum of one year recent experience as operating room nurse
Licensing Requirements: Current California RN license
Certification in American Heart Association issued (AHA) BLS and ACLS
PALS within 3 months of hire
Skill Requirements: Possess a thorough knowledge of general nursing theory and practice as well as a thorough knowledge of operating room techniques.
Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position
Posses a sense of responsibility, initiative, tact, discretion, and diplomacy
Physical Demands: Must be able to sit up to 2 hours and stand/walk for up to 4 hours or more per day. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Special Demands: While on call, employee must be able to respond to MMHS within 60 minutes. In the event of a STAT surgery, response time is as soon as possible. Ability to work effectively with patients, peers, physicians and ancillary departments.
Special Considerations: Will be dealing with patients age 0 to 120 years
