Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to maintain the appearance of the College campus inside and outside of all buildings and parking lots. This is accomplished by performing surface preparations; maintaining painted surfaces; maintaining flooring; maintaining ceilings; repairing concrete, stucco, and asphalt surfaces; assist with carpentry work as directed; assist with other maintenance duties as directed. This position will be assigned to the Carpenter/Paint Shop and will be required to work at any of the College's campuses as needed or as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalency.

Three (3) years related experience.

Valid Texas Driver License with ability to be insurable by Del Mar College.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and application techniques common to the painting trade.

Knowledge in the usage of tools, equipment, application techniques for installing or repairing drywall, plaster, stucco, VCT tile, ceramic tile, and masonry surfaces.

Knowledge and skill in handling the types of hazardous materials related to the painting trade including paints, paint strippers, adhesives, etc.

Knowledge of text and display requirements for signage applications.

Knowledge of shop practices and skill in using shop tools and equipment.

Knowledge and ability to use hand tools and power tools.

Skill in the preparation and application of paints, stains, and surface preparation materials to a wide variety of surfaces.

Ability to read blueprints/shop drawings and translate into finished products.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally.

Basic computer proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

Five (5) years of related full-time painting experience.

Experience with brick, stucco and plaster finish, drywall, ceramic wall tile, floor tile, and countertops.

Experience with VCT and glue down carpet.

Experience with installing ceiling grid and ceiling tile.

Experience with properly handling and storing old/waste paint products for disposal as Universal Waste or Hazardous Waste.

Some carpentry experience preferred.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Maintains painted surfaces, acoustical ceilings, and flooring by taping, floating, texturing new sheetrock walls; prepping, priming, and painting walls, ceilings, floors, doors, frames, windows, etc.; spray painting cabinets, lockers, doors, etc.; and sweeping, stripping, and painting parking lots and curbs.

Performs surface preparations by sanding, scraping, grinding, and filling holes; prepares and applies protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer, and other products to interior and exterior surfaces, including specialty coatings and furniture; installs or patches, texture, plaster and finish wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces.

Schedule work orders with building coordinators or person who requested the work; communicate with security to close parking lots/areas in order to sweep, stripe and paint.

Special painting projects such as painting campus directional signage.

Job Duty

Maintains flooring by removing glued-down carpeting; scraping off old vinyl flooring; chipping out old, broken, or loose ceramic tile; using leveling compound to level floors and other surfaces; installing new carpeting, floor tile, and ceramic tile.

Repairs concrete, stucco, and asphalt surfaces by breaking and removing damaged concrete and stucco; mixing concrete or stucco and trowel in place; breaking out and repairing broken asphalt in tennis courts and running track; resurfacing areas with all-weather finishes.

Job Duty

Maintain ceilings by setting up ladders and scaffolds; removing and replacing ceiling tiles.

Replace/install ceiling grid as directed.

Job Duty

Estimate, order, and obtain materials by estimating painting materials for projects; estimate flooring and ceiling materials for projects; order materials for projects; pickup materials and deliver to job site.

Properly store old/waste paint products for pickup by EH&S designated waste disposal contractor.

Job Duty

Contact contractors and vendors by calling contractors for proposals on special projects; calling vendors for pricing and availability of materials and equipment.

Job Duty

May assist the carpenters as needed or as directed.

May assist other Physical Facilities Shops when needed or as directed.

Performs related work as assigned.
