A Painter in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility is responsible for maintaining the interior and exterior aesthetic appearance of the building, ensuring a welcoming, clean, and safe, homelike environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This role involves prepping surfaces, applying paint, repairing drywall, managing inventory, and coordinating work orders to minimize disruption to residents.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Environment: Indoor and outdoor work in a nursing home, which may involve working in occupied resident rooms.
- Physical Activity: Frequent climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and reaching.
- Requirements: Often requires passing background checks, drug screenings, and TB tests due to working with vulnerable adults.
Typical Schedule
Often Monday to Friday daytime hours (e.g., 8:00 am - 4:30 pm), but may require flexibility for emergency maintenance.

- Painting & Preparation: Prep surfaces by cleaning, sanding, patching holes, and applying primer. Apply paint, varnish, and stains to walls, ceilings, trim, and doors.
- Surface Repairs: Perform minor carpentry repairs such as replacing wall protection, baseboards, corner guards, and patching drywall.
- Maintenance & Upkeep: Perform routine inspections of common areas, hallways, and resident rooms to identify and touch up scuffs or damage.
- Work Order Management: Execute planned and emergency work orders, prioritizing tasks to ensure timely completion.
- Infection Control & Safety: Adhere to strict safety guidelines, including infection control protocols, managing hazardous materials (paint, solvents), and using proper ventilation.
- Safety & Compliance: Use protective coverings such as drop cloths and masks to protect furniture, floors, and equipment.
- Inventory Control: Manage paint supplies and equipment, ensuring safe storage and prompt reordering of necessary materials.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
Key Qualifications
- Experience: Usually requires 1-3 years of professional painting experience, often in a commercial facility, maintenance, or residential setting.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50-100 lbs with assistance.
- Interpersonal Skills: Must have a patient, courteous demeanor when working around residents and staff.
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with various painting techniques, color matching, and drywall repair.
