Posting Information: We are currently hiring for a Para Educator - Special Education (1:1) at Evergreen Elementary for the 2026-2027 school year.

Interview Process: If selected for an interview, you will be invited to complete an Asynchronous Virtual Interview. Candidates chosen for a second round interview will participate in an in-person interview at a date to be determined.

Schedule: 6.5 hours per day; M-F. This position is temporary for the 26/27 school year, but may be extended into future school years based on student enrollment, funding, and program need.

Location: Evergreen Elementary

Salary: $23.03 - $28.18 per hour, depending on experience. The listed salary range is based on the 2025-2026 school year and will be updated once 2026-2027 salaries are finalized.

Base Paraeducator rate: $23.03 - $26.18 per hour. Positions supporting Special Education with DD/EBD receive an additional $2.00 per hour differential.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (overtime eligible)

Overview

Para Educators support the Shelton School District's Strategic Plan and School Improvement Plans through supporting and assisting with the supervision and instruction of students. This includes supporting the student's goals as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP), supporting the maintenance of positive student behavior, preparing and organizing classroom materials, performing classroom clerical tasks; providing general classroom assistance. (e.g.: prepare and organize classroom materials, clean, and disinfect toys and mats); providing one-on-one tutoring; assisting with classroom management; providing instructional assistance; conducting parental involvement activities; providing support in learning centers; assisting with the implementation of student educational plans; and providing instructional support services under the direct supervision of a teacher.

Requirements:

• Completed two (2) years (72 quarter credits) of study at an institution of higher learning OR AA degree from an approved institution, OR completion of the ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to pass a Federal criminal background check.
• Ability to complete 28 hours of District provided training within the first school year of employment as required by statute.
• Successful experiencing working with students with developmental disabilities (preferred, not required).
• Ability and willingness to learn and implement new strategies and techniques.
• Ability and willingness to work with students with varying disabilities both cognitive and physical.
• Possession of excellent communication skills including active listening and two-way communication.
• Ability and willingness to maintain an upbeat, positive, and collaborative demeanor.

Essential Functions

• Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teachers and students.
• Assists and supports the teacher with instructional activities which may include reading, writing, math, study skills, social skills, behavior and/or personal living skills.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Assists staff with discipline for the purpose of supporting a safe learning and working environment and building policies.
• Guides independent study (e.g.: enrichment work, remedial work, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student success.
• Implements, under the supervision of the teacher, instructional programs, and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
• Monitors individual students, classroom, lab, library, playground activities, etc. (e.g.: workstations, breakfast duty, lunch duty, bus duty, field trips and other campus activities) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
• Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g.: scheduling, copying, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
• Depending on assignment, assists with development and implementation of students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and developing students' skills in daily living, physical, social, communication and behavior.
• Depending on the assignment administers first aid, medical assistance, physical support and personal care to include toileting and diapering, for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or disabled children.
• Attends trainings and meetings as appropriate or directed.
• Develops and maintains professional, positive relationships with staff, students, and families.
• Collaborates with staff to achieve student, class, building, and District goals.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
