    Description

    The Special Education Paraeducator assists certified staff in achieving academic and physical objectives with students in Special Education (referred to as "students"). This position works one-on-one with students with significant medical needs or supports a small group of students identified as requiring special education services at school, requiring frequent interventions, and attendant care services. Care of students may occur both in the student's home, in school, and off-campus in some positions. This position works closely with an interdisciplinary team of certified staff, health care providers, and family as needed.

    Essential Functions:

    • Prepares educational materials under the direction of certified staff.
    • Assists students in mastering self-help skills (self-care, feeding, positioning, lifting, etc.).
    • Carries out instructional tasks planned by certified staff for individual students or groups of students.
    • Assists students in the lunchroom, playground, or other areas as assigned.
    • Assists students who are physically disabled with the use of adaptive equipment and other functional adaptations.
    • Assists students when participating in field trips and community trips.
    • Works closely with certified staff to provide follow-up supplemental aids and services for students.
    • May perform procedures including but not limited to catheterization and gastrostomy feedings after appropriate training.
    • Accompanies students to the bathroom and provides personal hygiene assistance (such as changing clothes or diapers) when required.
    • Operates and cares for instructional and functional equipment.
    • Additional duties as assigned by the Special Education Coordinator or Administrator.
