Performs a variety of routine school-based support and pupil contact duties related to supporting Multilingual Learners (MLs) and families within Baltimore City Public Schools City Schools by assisting teachers, administrators, and other designated professionals in both instructional and non-instructional activities in support of MLs and English Language Development (ELD) programs. Assists in planning and providing interpretations leading parent meetings and limiting informal translations. Works with MLs individually and in small groups following the direction of the assigned teacher. Assists in coordinating activities, events, and meetings for multilingual families.
Essential Functions
• Performs instructional support tasks. • Supports small groups. • Supports ELD work with families. • May assist ESOL teachers in creating support materials for lessons and activities and skill reinforcement activities under the guidance and direction of a teacher. • Treats all families, staff, and community interpretations in a professional and confidential manner. • Cultivates and maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, students, and families. • Supports school staff with interpreting a variety of meetings and interactions with emerging bilingual families. • Assists school staff by performing duties that require interactions with students and families who speak other languages. • Assists in establishing and maintaining communication between the school, home, and community that supports MLs or multilingual families. • Assists in organizing and conducting workshops and meetings for parents. • Maintains records of communication with multilingual families. • Works with school-based staff to encourage the involvement of emerging bilingual families in school activities. • The students activities may be monitored during lunch periods and recess as required. • Provides clerical, administrative, and/or general assistance in support of school programs and operations. • May require travel between school sites. • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies, follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, and professional standards.
Desired Qualifications
Required: Graduation from High school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. At least forty-eight college credits from an accredited college or university, OR successful completion of the MSDE ParaPro Assessment.
Knowledge and competency in both English and at least one other language, including the application of spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules of the languages spoken and written. Work with students and perform job duties in accordance with City Schools policies, procedures, and general practice, maintain records related to family communication, work with and provide a broad range of assistance to administrators, instructional staff, and other school personnel. Ability to cultivate and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, students, and families. Ability to handle all family, staff, and community interpretations in a professional and confidential manner. Ability to maintain clerical and student records. Ability to perform instructional tasks under the guidance and supervision of a teacher.
