Mountain Empire Community College

Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

This adjunct faculty position is available in the discipline of Legal Administration. Teaching may include a variety of formats including face-to-face and online. Adjunct faculty may teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters, and up to 8 credit hours during the summer session. Teaching load is based on student enrollment and college needs. The adjunct faculty contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.

Adjunct Faculty listings are on a continuous, open until filled basis. Applicants will be contacted on an as needed basis. Submission of on-line applications must also include unofficial transcripts of all college work completed. Official transcripts are required upon hire.

This position is designated as an employee in a non-restricted position in accordance with Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) Policy 2.20. A non-restricted position is one that is funded by sources considered continuous or recurring, such as Educational and General Funds.

Duties and Tasks:

  • Teach specific classes in the designated discipline in a classroom/virtual environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.
  • Develop course syllabi and instructional materials, delivering high-quality instruction, fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, and actively contributing to the academic, professional, and community life of the college.
  • Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of MECC while emphasizing instructional excellence through innovative teaching practices, curriculum development, and assessment.
  • Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization, committing to continuous professional growth aligned with the college"s mission and goals..

Essential Functions:

As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate"s degree or higher in the discipline plus two or more years of directly related experience, especially as a paralegal.
  • Must demonstrate ability to deliver coursework electronically in online environment and utilizing multiple teaching strategies as well as in-person instruction.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the varied backgrounds and experiences of student populations and the ability to create a sense of belonging, support, and engagement that considers and values all students in curriculum development and teaching.
  • Proficiency in using computers, relevant software applications, and the institution's learning management system (LMS) is required.

Additional Considerations:

  • Bachelor"s degree in Paralegal Studies or higher.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into instruction.
