Description

The purpose of this position is to perform responsible paraprofessional work in assisting the County Attorney's Office with trials, appeals, investigations, real estate transactions, legal research and completing other tasks as requested by the County Attorney or Deputy County Attorney.

Examples of Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Performs legal research, completes specially assigned projects, and manages complex problems and time-constrained tasks with rapid but error-free analyses.
  • Drafts, reviews and analyzes legal documents including complaints, interrogatories, affidavits, motions, notices, subpoenas and jury instructions, and complete cite checking in preparation of filing briefs and motions.
  • Assists attorneys with case development and trial preparation.
  • Coordinates witnesses and exhibits for court. Responsible for responding to subpoenas of County staff and coordinating appearances in court when required.
  • Communicates with clients, vendors, witnesses, and staff throughout the litigation process.
  • Reviews and analyzes documents and data to prepare matters for legal representation.
  • Maintains, organizes and creates resources and databases. Responsible for responding to discovery requests including communicating with all appropriate staff, obtaining and reviewing documents, and ensuring the requesting party receives all data by the required deadline.
  • Coordinates and schedules conferences with clients, witnesses and opposing parties. Schedules meetings and discussions as requested by the County Attorney.
  • Analyzes plans, data, and prepares pleading and related documents.
  • Obtain data from clients and second parties. Responsible for responding to subpoenas including communication with County employees, attorneys and the Court when appropriate.
  • Assists in monitoring and responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires an Associate's degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education.
  • Over four years and up to and including eight years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Certified Paralegal.

Supplemental Information

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
