We are currently seeking a qualified Paralegal II to support the Criminal and/or Civil Divisions of the U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) in Macon, Georgia.
Position Overview
The Paralegal II will provide critical litigation support to Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in a fast-paced, high-volume legal environment. This role requires specialized knowledge of federal civil or criminal procedures, legal research, and case management. The contractor will work under the direct supervision of government attorneys and will be responsible for preparing legal documents, conducting research, and managing discovery and deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Drafting: Prepare initial drafts of pleadings, motions, and other legal documents for review and approval by AUSAs.
- Discovery Management: Read, analyze, and summarize written discovery and document productions for attorney review.
- Legal Research: Conduct preliminary legal research using Westlaw, LexisNexis, PACER, and other federal databases to support civil and criminal cases.
- Expert Witness Support: Assist in the search, identification, and evaluation of expert witnesses; review expert reports and prepare initial impressions.
- Deadline Management: Track and maintain court-ordered deadlines, discovery schedules, and statute of limitations.
- Trial Preparation: Prepare final pleadings, exhibit lists, and trial notebooks for filing with the district court.
- Case Support: Support defensive and offensive civil claims and assist with all phases of criminal prosecution or civil litigation as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or a related field, OR a two-year degree with a paralegal certificate.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of paralegal experience, preferably in a federal or litigation environment.
Skills:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Working knowledge of Westlaw and LexisNexis.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Interpersonal: Ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff, attorneys, and the public; strong people skills reflecting a courteous and tactful manner.
- Work Ethic: Self-starter capable of thriving in a deadline-driven, high-pressure environment; able to understand and respond to direction well.
- Driver's License: Valid U.S. driver's license (travel within the district may be required).
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Security: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Tier 4 Public Trust background investigation.
Schedule and Hours
- Standard Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (with 1-hour lunch) or 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (with 30-minute lunch).
- Overtime: Occasionally required and must be pre-approved.
- Holidays: Federal holidays observed; no work performed unless specifically authorized.
