Distinguishing Features of the Class
The Paralegal is responsible for performing a variety of tasks that, while not requiring the skills of an attorney, nevertheless entails the application of limited legal procedures. The Paralegal provides assistance in areas of research, preparation and review of real estate laws, regulations and policies, documents, public record searches, compiling and prepares information. Work is performed under the supervision of the Corporation Counsel and the Director of Real Estate. No supervision will be exercised over personnel.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Prepares, reviews and proofreads deeds, contracts, agreements, leases, affidavits, closing documents, etc.;
Serves as liaison between the Division of Real Estate and Law Department;
Coordination with attorney's title, survey, and appraisal companies, developers, and agencies;
Reviews documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and procedural requirements;
Assist in preparing and reviewing legal descriptions, reports, and documentation related to property transactions;
Support title review, public record searches, and property status verifications;
Research statutory and case law, administrative rules, regulations and policies to determine applicability;
Complies, analyzes, and maintains data related to legal matters and real estate transactions including maintenance of digital and physical transaction files;
Identifies issues, inconsistencies, and risks within legal or transaction files;
Supports meetings by preparing agendas, notices, minutes, and attends meetings as needed;
Follows through on court or administrative decisions to ensure they are implemented;
Perform investigative work;
Track and report on compliance and status;
Responds to inquires and manages correspondence;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
(A.) Master's Degree from a college or university accredited by a local, regional, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education (any major) and a minimum of 5 years' experience in Real Estate law, real estate transactions and real estate legal terminology;
OR
(B.) Bachelor's Degree from a college or university accredited by a local, regional, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education (any major), PLUS a Certificate of Completion in Paralegal Studies or Legal Assistant Program with a minimum of 5 years' experience in Real Estate law, real estate transactions and real estate legal terminology;
OR
(C.) Associates degree from a college or university accredited by a local, regional, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education (any major), PLUS a Certificate of Completion in Paralegal Studies or Legal Assistant Program with two years of full-time experience in work involving legal research and a minimum of 8 years' experience in Real Estate law, real estate transactions and real estate legal terminology.
Special Requirement:
Must have and maintain Notary Public license throughout employment.
Note: Experience in real estate law, municipal law, or land disposition experience with closings, title review, and property transactions.
