Join the Office of General Counsel as a Paralegal and play a key role in supporting a wide range of legal matters across the District. In this position, you will assist with investigations, litigation support, subpoena responses, garnishments, legal research, case management, and the preparation of legal documents. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with attorneys and stakeholders across the organization while contributing to legal compliance, risk management, and the Districts mission. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
Essential Functions
Litigation-related paralegal functions (30%):
- Designs, formats and edits moderately complex to complex legal documents.
- Composes and develops basic original documents, memoranda, correspondence and reports.
- Performs basic to moderately complex legal research and analysis of sources and reference material, and drafts memoranda, legal summaries and reports based on research findings.
- Calendars important dates related to the progress of cases, submission of documents, and court/hearing appearances.
- Gathers and organizes discovery documents and exhibits in support of dispositive motions under the supervision of the District's in-house attorneys and in collaboration with outside counsel.
- Serves and files legal papers and responses, in compliance with local and federal court rules.
- Coordinates receipt of legal service of process on behalf of MCCCD, and confirms compliance and identifies deficiencies in service pursuant to MCCCD policies and applicable court rules.
- Works with outside counsel to coordinate filings and other requirements under applicable laws and regulations.
- Assists with activities associated with gathering paperwork needed for regulatory bodies.
- Assists in case management for external hearings.
- Assists attorneys and regional directors in various legal service programs, such as Title IX and Title VII investigation and compliance activities; reviews legal documents and forms for completeness and conformance to applicable legal codes and conventions.
Legal administrative functions (30%):
- Organizes and/or maintains legal documents, records, files, logs, and case management system, according to established procedures.
- Maintains and updates statistical records, e-Discovery, and database information; conducts database searches; determines and gathers pertinent information for investigations, litigation, garnishments, subpoenas, and public records responses.
Projects (30%):
- Responds to client inquiries and information requests; addresses routine requests according to procedures and guidelines.
- Researches response information and/or refers to non-routine requests as required; prepares legal procedural documentation such as user manuals, draft policies, and procedures.
- Completes projects assigned by attorneys, independently and in collaboration with other staff.
