Job Summary
Paramedics demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations and possess the knowledge and necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting. They administer emergency care and treatment, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, and establish priority for required emergency care. Paramedics provide advanced medical care to patients, complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. They may need to assist and give direction to additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders at the scene and/or during transport.
Responsibilities
- Administer emergency care and treatment
- Determine the nature and extent of illness or injury
- Establish priority for required emergency care
- Provide advanced medical care to patients
- Assist and give direction to EMS Responders
- Provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children
- Determine the appropriate facility that patients should be transported to
- Assess the patient while in route to the emergency facility
- Administer additional care as indicated or given by medical direction
- Use equipment included in the medical transport environment
- Observe, record, and report to physician the patients condition or injury, treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment
- Demonstrate good communication with the receiving facility
- Complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided
- Maintain communication with the patient and family
- Assist with patient care in the receiving facility
- Provide welcoming and educational environment for students
- Complete any academic assessments in a timely fashion
Physical Demands
- Physical activities include but not limited to:
- Will require considerable use of arms and legs
- Moving of whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associates Degree in Paramedic Technology or Paramedicine preferred
- Thorough knowledge of paramedic principles, practices, and techniques
- Knowledge of how various equipment, such as a monitor or defibrillator, work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise
- Hold national registry status at a Paramedic level
- Additional training provided, workshops, and staff meetings are to be attended as per policy
- Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license
- If working in Minnesota, an Advanced RN-EMT certification is accepted
- Additional licensures as required depending upon state
- Paramedic PAR Certification
- National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 completed and continued education hours as mandated by accreditation
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent advanced version for paramedics
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred depending on location
- Must possess a valid drivers license and have a good driving record
