This position will work 12 hour rotating shifts. This position is required to attend all continuing education classes required by Onslow County-Camp Lejeune EMS System. This position will be required to attend an in-person, two-week Academy that is held Monday-Friday, 0800-1700 and complete a Field Training Program after completion of the Academy. Performs responsible protective service work in providing emergency medical services to critically ill and injured patients under emergency conditions; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Emergency Medical Services Battalion Chief and Paramedic Captain. Position Responsibilities Responding to emergency calls, providing emergency medical services and transportation; preparing and maintaining detailed records. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Responds to emergency calls involving chest pain, possible heart attack, respiratory distress, unconsciousness, diabetic shock, drug overdose, drowning, trauma, behavioral or other true medical emergency conditions which might require advanced life support; provides emergency medical care in accordance with established guidelines and written verbal instructions from physicians. Determines extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for required care. Transmits vital patient information and telemetry data to receiving medical care facility. Observes patient in route and administers additional care as needed. Inspects advanced life support and telemetry equipment daily and ensures proper maintenance and operating conditions and inventories supplies. Assists in training students and intermediates. Interacts with assisting law enforcement and fire and rescue agencies and the public. May be required to operate a County/emergency vehicle in the course of employment. Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer. Performs related tasks as required. Qualifications Thorough knowledge of emergency medical care techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of advanced life support methods, procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of medical terminology; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, techniques and equipment required for emergency medical treatment; thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the County; ability to perform duties in emergency situations and to evaluate and differentially diagnose patients conditions and communicate clearly with professional medical personnel; ability to perform general emergency medical treatment and specialized cardiac treatment; ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency and stress situations; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with physicians, fellow employees and the public; and ability to prepare reports. Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
