The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Paramedic to provide specialized patient care within the highly regulated environment of the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Center. This position is responsible for assessing patients' care needs, delivering and evaluating high-quality clinical care, and applying evidence-based practices to support safe and effective imaging procedures. The Paramedic collaborates closely with physicians, nurses, technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure exceptional patient outcomes while providing leadership and support to maintain the highest standards of patient care, safety, and operational excellence.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
  • Provides pre, intra- and post procedure nursing care (assessment, monitoring, intervention and education) related to diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • Assists in the collection of arterial and venous blood samples.
  • Prepares and completes daily patient workup for next day's scheduled patients, including PET/CT, PET/MRI and research patients
  • Completes, documents, and files required daily/weekly/monthly equipment checks and clinic audits
  • Monitors and ensures adequate supply levels in the department, ordering supplies
  • Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions
  • Documents and reports interventions and patient/family response/education
  • Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan
  • Implements interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff. Follows universal precautions
  • Completes Point of Care (POC) testing
  • Administers pharmaceuticals
  • Completes other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of and ability to perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) procedures.
  • Knowledge of drug and medical terminology
  • Knowledge of most common emergency drugs and their uses and usual doses
  • Knowledge of institutional and unit policies, processes, and forms
  • Ability to perform patient care as delegated
  • Ability to transport monitored patients
  • Ability to use a computer
  • Ability to maintain and stock inventory
  • Ability to alter work schedule to meet unit/patient needs

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D Equivalent
  • Current paramedic certification by the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services
  • Current course completion card in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider by the American Heart Association
  • Current course completion card in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by the American Heart Association

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience establishing peripheral intravenous (IV) access
  • Experience accessing implanted vascular access devices (e.g., implanted ports)
