Qualifications:
60 hours of college coursework, or
An approved teacher aide program, or
A passing score on the ParaPro test, or
Passing the relevant Work Keys tests to be considered HQ by the ISBE
General Responsibilities: Assists teachers in achieving instructional objectives by working with individual students or small groups of students and promoting a well-organized classroom environment in which all students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resources.
Duties:
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a comprehensive understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operates and cares for instructional equipment used in the classroom.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, or media work.
- Assists large group activities as assigned.
- Provides information and help to any substitute teacher.
- Helps students with daily living and functional skills as appropriate.
- Alerts the classroom teacher and other appropriate staff to relevant information about a student in a timely manner.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and respects confidentiality of information.
- Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.
- Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students.
- Helps students utilize equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Follows school, district, state and federal regulations and rules.
- Performs all duties in a professional and timely manner.
- Works to develop and instill a positive self-worth and confidence in students.
- Provides positive feedback and encouragement to students and provides opportunities to develop special abilities and talents.
- Uses appropriate behavior interventions as outlined in school policies and procedures.
- Reports any illness, accident or injury to their supervisor and the principal immediately.
- Assists in keeping classrooms and the school grounds neat, clean, safe and orderly.
- Supervises students at all times and does not leave students unattended.
- Reports theft or damage to school or personal property immediately to the teacher and principal.
- Arrives on time and follows assigned duties until the end of the school day.
- Seeks awareness and clarification of school and district rules, policies and procedures through the building principal or other appropriate administrative staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Salary varies with experience and education. Base pay is $16.98
