Job Description for Paraprofessional Classroom Aide and/or Student Aide

While the responsibilities of aides will differ from class to class, they generally fall

into the following categories: classroom, student aide, instructional skills

reinforcement, clerical, and materials/equipment. The job descriptions below should

not be considered inclusive or inflexible.

Skill Reinforcement

  • Assist in the planning of learning activities with the teacher.
  • Observing and reporting student's progress and problems to the teacher.
  • Working with students in various learning centers. ,
  • Helping students learn to use classroom material/equipment.
  • Helping individual students understand the teacher's directions.
  • Participating with the class during group time.
  • Carrying out planned activities with a few students.
  • Assisting with and guiding small group activities and special projects.
  • Reading or telling stories to students.
  • Helping students choose library books.
  • Providing clarification and reinforcement during silent/oral reading process.
  • Circulating around the classroom to clarify instructions, answer questions,

redirect and maintain students on task.

  • Assisting individual students.

Other Responsibilities

  • Redirecting an inattentive student into available activities.
  • Helping students move from one activity to another in the classroom.
  • Attend workshops/in-service presentations as per the Director of Special Services.
  • Periodically meet with CST upon request
  • Remain with students in special classes. (i.e. music, art, library, physical

education)

  • Assist specialists (i.e. music, art, library, physical education staff) as per their

direction.

  • Aiding students in sharing, participating, and choosing constructive activities.
  • Assisting in helping children learn acceptable behavior. (Use appropriate~

language/pitch)

  • Helping pupils with their outer clothing. (Coats, gloves, hats, boots, etc.)
  • Overseeing arrival and departure by bus or car according to Building

Administrator's guidelines.

  • Assisting teacher on field trips.
  • Assisting students with wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc.
  • Changes diapers when appropriate.
  • Will act as a transition job coach
  • Assisting students with toileting needs.

Material/Equipment/Housekeeping

  • Gathering and preparing materials.
  • Preparing classrooms for next activity.
  • Helping student's clean up and put things away.
  • Preparing snacks and cleaning up spills.
  • Assisting teacher in getting class ready for the next day.
  • Insuring cleanliness and good order in the classroom.
  • Obtaining and returning audiovisual equipment and supplies from designated

locations.

  • Maintaining classroom material in order.
  • Duplicating materials. *
  • Distributing materials.
  • Maintaining inventory of books and supplies.
  • Taking proper care of materials and keeping materials in order.
  • Decorating bulletin boards and maintaining general attractiveness of the

classroom.

  • . Making special or unique arrangements for the day.
  • Cutting, drawing, pasting pictures for use by the students.

Note:

  • The paraprofessional may not cover the class at anytime.
  • Aides are not allowed to grade papers.
  • *It is our district's common practice that classroom or student aides are not

permitted to leave the class during instructional time to duplicate materials

for the teacher. However, if the instructional size of the class falls below the

state allowable enrollment for whatever reason on a given day, or if the

individual student that an aide is responsible for is absent, the classroom

teacher may request that the aide leave the classroom for the purpose of

duplicating materials.

  • The paraprofessional shall never open the classroom door and allow students

entry unless the teacher is present.

  • Any other duties or assignments as determined by the Director or

Superintendent and/or Designee.

SALARY, EMPLOYMENT PERIOD AND UNION AFFILIATION

  1. Salary: $21.64 per hour/Part-Time

  2. Employment Period: Ten (10) Months

  3. Union Affiliation: Belleville Paraprofessional and Bus Drivers Association
