Summary of Purpose

Performs paraprofessional duties in support of Chemistry labs. Typical duties for all paraprofessionals are listed below. The employee is expected to work in a multi-cultural, diverse working environment. This is an in-person position.

Typical Duties

This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required:

  1. Maintains inventories, orders supplies in accordance with college purchasing procedures, prepares maintenance work orders, and arranges for outside repairs of equipment and instruments, as necessary.

  2. Monitors safety and security of work area, equipment, supplies, and materials; maintains cleanliness of work area, ensuring conformity with MIOSHA directives.

  3. Coordinate and staffs open lab hours

  4. Issues and checks in instruments, teaching aids, supplies, equipment, and materials.

  5. Performs necessary clerical duties and functions.

  6. Performs related tasks, as assigned.

  7. Ability to work additional hours, as needed

SCIENCE: biology, chemistry, physics, general science and emergency medical technologies

  1. Sets up and cleans equipment and instruments; maintains and performs minor repairs on equipment and instruments.

  2. Travels off-campus to obtain supplies and materials; delivers and picks up equipment and instruments to be repaired.

  3. Sets up for experiments, demonstrations and lab practicals.

  4. Prepares solutions, reagents, unknowns, specimens, media, and cultures.

  5. Maintains student equipment and supply drawers.

  6. Raises and cares for laboratory organisms.

  7. Monitors and arranges disposal of chemical and bio-hazard waste.

Minimum Education and Experience

EDUCATION: An earned Associate's degree or higher in Chemistry

  • OR -

An Associate Degree or higher with a minimum of 16 college credit hours in Chemistry

  • AND -

EXPERIENCE: Must possess and maintain a current and valid Michigan drivers license

Part-time Classified employees are offered the opportunity to have medical, dental, vision at the full monthly premium; life insurance is also available at a nominal cost. Participation requires that benefit costs be taken via payroll deduction.
