    Description

    The School District of West Salem is right next door to La Crosse in the beautiful Coulee Region of Western Wisconsin. Our 3 buildings are within walking distance of each other on an approximate 100-acre campus on the edge of town. Students in grades K-12 are issued MacBooks or iPads as part of its 1:1 digital learning environment.

    The School District of West Salem is seeking qualified individuals who would like the opportunity to become part of our team.

    This position is 7.0 hours per day - 8:00-3:30.

    • Support the learning, daily living skills, behavioral, and safety needs of our students as specified in their IEPs; CPI certification is ideal.
    • Assist teachers in specialized areas regarding the care and safety of students including behavior issues.
    • Provide supervision in classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, indoor recess, library, gymnasium, playground and bus loading areas, van and bus.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    School District Employees must have strong interpersonal skills, professionalism and the ability to work well with adults, children of all ages and the public.

    Paraprofessional with brailling responsibilities: We are looking for a dynamic staff member to join our team and enhance the effectiveness of learning opportunities for students with visual impairments. This person is responsible for braille production, materials modification, clerical tasks, and working directly with students. This person works under the direction of the special education teacher and school administrator. Qualifications:

    • Minimum Education/Certification:
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Associate degree or commensurate credits preferred
    • Ability to be licensed as a Special Education Paraprofessional

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

    • Typing and keyboarding skills
    • Experienced with technology
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
    • Experience with children with disabilities is strongly preferred
    • Willingness to learn and transcribe Braille

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    • Assisting students with Braille reading and writing, providing individualized or small group instruction.
    • Work with and under the immediate direction of the Special Education teacher and with VI professionals.
    • Use braille translation software and word processing programs on Apple computer.
    • Creating or adapting textbooks, workbooks, worksheets, and other learning materials in Braille.
    • Organizing materials, monitoring student behavior, and minimizing distractions to create a conducive learning environment.
    • Assist the special education teachers with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of students with visual impairments.
    • Participate in training on any new VI technology (e.g. software, computers, adaptive assisted devices).
    • Helping students learn to advocate for their needs and fostering positive attitudes about their abilities.
    • Ensuring students have access to necessary resources and support to participate fully in school activities.
    • Encouraging students to develop self-reliance and problem-solving skills in academic and social situations.

    Assist the teacher(s) with:

    • Planning, production, and organization of instructional material
    • Individual and/or group instruction activities
    • Promote and maintain educational team goals
    • Maintaining and taking educational IEP goal data
    • Operate in accordance with district and school regulations
    • Braille, record, or enlarge textbooks, workbooks, worksheets, and diagnostic tests that are not available through state agencies
    • Assist the teachers in promoting student independence
    • Assist the teachers with modifications and supplemental services necessary for the education of students with visual impairments

    • Assistive technology (such as electronic braillenote, abacus)
