Position Summary

The 1:1 Paraprofessional for a student with a visual impairment works under the direct supervision of certified professional staff, including the classroom teacher and Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI), to provide individualized support that enables the student to safely access the educational environment, curriculum, and school activities.

The paraprofessional assists the student in developing independence while providing accommodations and support as outlined in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The goal of the position is to promote the student's academic success, social participation, and increasing independence rather than fostering dependence on adult assistance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide one-to-one support to a student with a visual impairment throughout the school day as outlined in the student's IEP.

Assist the student in accessing instructional materials, classroom activities, and technology using accommodations recommended by the TVI.

Support the student with orientation within the school environment while encouraging independence and reinforcing orientation and mobility skills as directed by appropriate specialists.

Assist in adapting classroom materials as directed by the teacher and TVI.

Reinforce instructional strategies and accommodations developed by certified staff.

Support the student's participation in classroom instruction, transitions, specials, field trips, assemblies, and extracurricular activities, as appropriate.

Encourage the student's independence in completing academic tasks, organizing materials, and managing daily routines.

Maintain awareness of environmental safety and communicate concerns to appropriate staff.

Collaborate with teachers, TVIs, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, related service providers, and administrators to support implementation of the student's educational program.

Collect observational data and document student progress as requested by supervising staff.

Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with district policies and state and federal regulations.

Attend training sessions and professional development related to visual impairment, assistive technology, and instructional supports as required.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervising staff.

Qualifications & Requirements

High School Diploma and successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment, or an Associate's Degree.

Experience working with children or students with disabilities is preferred.

Experience supporting students with visual impairments is preferred but not required.

Willingness to participate in training related to visual impairment, assistive technology, orientation and mobility, and specialized instructional supports.

Bilingual skills or a willingness to learn a second language is a plus.
