Job Description: Parent mentors are parents of children with disabilities who are employed by the districts to support other parents by providing information and resources to help their children succeed in school and transition from school to adult life. Qualification RequirementsA parent or family member of a child with a disability who is currently receiving or has previously received special education and related services through an IEP.Strong oral/written communication skills. Strong organization and computer skills. Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCommunicating with parents one-on-one regarding parent concerns and/or needsSupporting parents participation in meetingsHelping parents understand the policies, practices and procedures of special education servicesResearching information needed by parent(s) to increase knowledge/aid in attaining services beyond schoolPreparing/Presenting presentations to building awareness and understanding to parents, teachers, and community members related to disabilitiesPreparing and updating informational packets for parents to be distributed by email, student delivery, mailings, social media and/or website postings to facilitate continuous lines of communicationServing on committees as neededFacilitating and supporting school based parent engagement activitiesCoordinating with Parent Resource Centers and providing them with Special Education information and trainings for parentsFind resources for assist students/parentsCoordinating with other agencies/groups such as GLRS, Parent to Parent, Refugee Family Services, etc.Attending required trainings for Parent Mentors Foster meaningful line of communication between home and school that improve attendance and overall student performanceProviding transitional service support that improve post school outcomesOther duties as assigned by the Special Education Director Position Requirements: These required meetings are during the traditional school day. Must attend 2-day training annually hosted by GaDOE typically in early fall (August/September)Must attend monthly virtual sessions typically 1 hour long hosted by GaDOEMust attend bi-monthly regional meetings  Reports To: Special Education DirectorThe specific duties and responsibilities shown in this job description are not intended to nor do they limit in any manner the employer's ability to establish or change the content, nature or functions of the duties and responsibilities for the job described above.
