About us:

Burlington Recreation and Parks provide a diverse range of programs that enhances the well-being of our residents. What you will do:

An employee in this role supervises the maintenance and repair of park grounds and facilities. Responsibilities include overseeing staff for event setup, amusement ride maintenance, playground inspections, and aquatic filtration system upkeep. The employee ensures that park facilities are safe and clean for Burlington residents. Daily duties involve assigning tasks, monitoring progress, providing guidance, and resolving issues.

Examples of Duties

Equipment Operation: Operates hand and power tools, tractors, skid steers, and other equipment needed to complete maintenance and repair work.

Amusement Ride Maintenance: Inspects, maintains, and repairs amusement park rides. Helps ensure rides are safe to operate and meet North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) requirements.

Playground Maintenance: Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of playground equipment in accordance with ASTM and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards.

Aquatic Facility Maintenance: Assists with the maintenance and repair of filtration systems, pumps, and related equipment at city pools and splash parks.

Staff Support and Training: Assists employees with technical questions, demonstrates proper work methods, provides equipment training, and reinforces safe work practices.

On Call Responsibilities: Works nights and weekends as needed and participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours maintenance issues.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of Rules and Regulations: Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations governing the use and function of recreation and parks facilities.

Park Maintenance Practices and Equipment: In-depth understanding of methods, materials, practices, and tools used in park maintenance and landscape management.

Safety: Knowledge of workplace hazards and accepted safety practices related to park maintenance, construction, and equipment operation.

Work Planning and Supervision: Ability to organize, assign, and oversee the work of employees to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Decision Making: Ability to use sound judgment, solve problems, and make decisions in a timely manner while carrying out assigned responsibilities.

Communication and Working Relationships: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, contractors, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and considerable experience in construction, park maintenance, or facility maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Special Requirements

  • Certified Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or the ability to acquire in (6) months
  • NC Pesticide License or the ability to acquire in (6) months

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work in this class is described as strenuous using a negligible amount of force occasionally to move objects and complete tasks.

  • Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

  • Work necessitates visual acuity to operate machines such as a drill press, power saws, other power tools, and small equipment.

  • The Employee is subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, oils, noise, extreme weather conditions and vibration.

  • Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
